And his dabo girl ex-girlfriend Mardah went to a good school to study. Which was why they brole up... too long distant.Jake applies to the Pennington School in New Zealand.
Makes me wonder if he did something that got his credits for one year revoked but not quite enough to get expelled the first time. (Wesley and the rest of his squad got that at the end of "The First Duty".)Something I noticed recently re-watching Bread and Circuses was that RM Merik was said to have washed out of Starfleet Academy during his fifth year. Now, I'm not going to go all Thermian on y'all and cry "canon violation" or "alternate universe" or anything like that, but I will say that it stood out to me while re-watching given all that's been established about the Academy since then.
Context would imply that "fifth year" is a normal part of the school's program. It makes sense to me - he didn't earn enough credits as of the fourth year, for whatever reason, took a fifth to try and get them, and still didn't make it before being kicked out.
Fifth year might be the post grad program or command school. (dare I say "war college?) Perhaps fleet jargon for those is "fifth year."It may be optional for some programs and required for others.
SPOCK: Curious, Captain, the similarity in names. Were you told why Merik was dropped from the Space Academy?
KIRK: He failed a psycho-simulator test. All it takes is a split second of indecision. Hardly the type to become a political strongman.
It's how they weed out the psychos. (Not 100% successful )Whatever Merik was tested on required an instant response.

Ro left the Enterprise for some time to attend an advanced tactical training course.Fifth year might be the post grad program or command school. (dare I say "war college?) Perhaps fleet jargon for those is "fifth year."
My head canon has Lt Saavik and Lt Kirk (both of them) attending such a course.Ro left the Enterprise for some time to attend an advanced tactical training course.
That actually tracks really well with what's been established. My head canon has Lt Saavik and Lt Kirk (both of them) attending such a course.
It would also help explain why Kirk was already an Ensign and then a Lieutenant with a staff instructor position while still at the Academy. My head canon has Lt Saavik and Lt Kirk (both of them) attending such a course.
