New project - TOS Enterprise 1341-foot version full interior 3D model

Thanks for that insight @Mytran! I was racking my brain to find out where I had heard the bit about the cameras but couldn't find anything concrete. It was likely just speculation that I took to heart because at the time it made a lot of sense. But your pic from "Amok Time" makes it clear that they weren't shooting through a hole in the wall.

I have removed that bit from my video, although YouTube says it will be about an hour before the vid is updated for all to see.
It's a natural conclusion to come to about the windows, they're such an odd feature!

I am both intrigued and a bit concerned with what AI can do now. This image comprises original Blueprints by Jim Botaitis, Crew Quarters set model rendered by me, and background studio generated by Google's "Nano Banana" algorithm. I'm coming to the conclusion that the use of AI may OK as long as it doesn't blatantly rip off the original artists, that it is acknowledged what parts of the image were generated in AI, and that the AI watermark (the small star in the lower right on this image, for example) be left on the image.

Lots of updates today. In "Journey to Babel" we got a great scene at the entrance to the Hangar Bay. While modeling this area in Blender, I picked up on some details that I hadn't noticed before. For example, it looks like there are three sliding doors that make up the entrance to the Hangar as you can see from the screen grab further below. This makes sense for an airlock type entrance.

Also, the makers misspelled "HANGAR" (a large building or area for housing and maintaining aircraft) as "HANGER" (a device used for hanging clothes). Screen grab courtesy of tos.trekcore.com.

Also doing a bit of work on the cargo lift area that is just forward of the hangar bay. I put in some non-canon force field guard rails around the cargo elevator that turn on when it is in use.

These look glorious! Love seeing the new sections of the Hangar Deck.

However, I'm not sure that middle section is a door, I think it is just a kind of baffle in between in the inner and outer doors. It doesn't seem to move at all when the security guards are entering the shuttlebay.

In this scene the blue door moves first and slides past the adjacent grey panel, by which time the grey door on the shuttlebay side has started to move. But the inner grey "baffle" panel is never seen to move.

While it certainly is an odd design choice to have the baffle section intrude so much into the open doorway it's actually a big clue as to where this particular piece of set was repurposed from, as it's not the first time that the baffle between 2 doors is seen either. The more common location is on the turbolift which was usually depicted (quite correctly IMO) in having an inner and outer set of pocket doors.

While double pocket doors on the corridor set were 48" wide, the turbolift doors were just 40" wide (the reason for this is connected to the diameter of the turbolift).
This difference of 8" is what we're seeing when the blue doors swoosh open; an intrusion of 4" each side into the frame.

Project update: I now have the beginnings of a system to create the type of display panels seen on the TOS Bridge. Still need to add the capability for shapes other than circles and rectangles, text, etc. It took me two days to build this system, but I was able to whip out this display in just a few minutes.

The Science Station is coming along. All these panels are animated. I'll soon publish a video of these in action and in the context of my entire TOS Enterprise interior model.

You should make a geometry nodes tutorial.
Tallguy,

I have released two videos so far about how to use these assets (see below). They are designed to be as easy to use as possible given that Blender has a steep learning curve. My idea is that anyone who wants to use these assets can make custom TOS-style set pieces without having to dive into the complexities of geometry nodes. I'll be making more tutorial videos in the future, but they'll be how to customize my assets with the parameters that geometry nodes provide, not on how to build the assets with geometry nodes.

There are many, many blender geometry node tutorials on YouTube (I've relied on them throughout this project), and I don't think I could do a better job than what's already out there. Of course, anyone who downloads my assets can go into the geometry node editor to see how the sausage is made.

From the smallest detail on the Bridge, to the sweeping complexity of each and every deck, I aim to model the entire interior of the U.S.S. Enterprise as seen on Star Trek TOS and depicted by @Jim Botaitis in his blueprints (link below).

COMING SOON -- walkthroughs with mini maps. I've been wanting to do this in Blender for a long time but just figured out how today. I can now use Blender's compositor to effortlessly overlay a mini map of @Jim Botaitis' wonderful blueprints onto my renders. I've added a captain's insignia as the pointer which indicates location and direction. It tracks the first-person camera throughout the animation to give a perspective of where you are on the ship. I just have these two stills for now, but more to come!

Looks really good, even without all those additional features you mention (although I can't wait to see those as well!)

The vid does depict quite a long walk from the turbolift to Kirk's cabin, but I appreciate that this is a result of Jim's deck plans. However, I do like the little "chess room" he accommodated in between Kirk and Spock's cabins so I really can't complain!

I measured the distance in my blueprints. The path shown is 38 meters. The port turbo-lift is only 31 meters from Kirk's quarters; maybe that one was busy.

The chess room is a result of a short story I read that I really enjoyed. I wanted to incorporate it as my way of paying homage to that story, that memory.

By the way, Todd, what do this signs beside the door to that chess room say? I can't quite read them.

Jim, here's a clearer pic of the signage at this door. I opened the door for this shot to show Kirk and Spock's private chess table:

I borrowed some of the wording from this screencap:

mirror-mirror-br-210.jpg

I have motion blur turned on for the animations, so that's why it is difficult to get a clean shot of a single frame. I'll have a higher resolution video of the walkthrough with all the lighting, sound effect, and other improvements I listed coming soon.

It's possible my opinion is skewed by my familiarity with the filming sets, although watching the video this morning got me thinking about how often we actually see Kirk moving inbetween his cabin and the nearest turbolift. The 2 main examples I can think of are:
  • The Enemy Within - Kirk and Spock leave the cabin and board the turbolift at the end of the corridor, 8 meters away
  • What Are Little Girls Made Of - Kirk arrives by the same turbolift as above and enters his quarters 8 meters away. However, when he leaves (thanks to some editing in of a scene originally filmed for The Corbomite Maneuver) he walks at least another 16 meters before boarding a totally different turbolift!
Later episodes seem to avoid Kirk going directly from the turbolift to his quarters which avoids the limitations of the set and also helps imply the larger size of the Enterprise.

...Later episodes seem to avoid Kirk going directly from the turbolift to his quarters which avoids the limitations of the set and also helps imply the larger size of the Enterprise.
It wasn't until I started rewatching TOS episodes multiple times in research for this project that I noticed in some scenes that require dialog while Kirk, Spock, and/or McCoy are walking through the corridor, they sometimes walk very slowly! If they walked at a normal pace, they would run out of corridor before they finished their lines! It gave me an appreciation of how creative the show runners had to be to make the most of that relatively small set.
