Kasidy Yates did nothing illegal

In fact the more I think about this the fact the higher ups like Sisko can bomb planets and start/encourage wars and get away it, and Dax can go off murdering Klingons, while the little people get jailed for a bit of illegal activity... well nothing has changed from the 21st century!

All of the above is partly why I refer to it as the "Anti-Trek": the same old song and dance, only, with new suits and dresses.

None of those things are "medical supplies." Yes, there are some drugs that are bad. That's not what was happening here. Biomemetic gel isn't "medical supplies", either.
We don't know what the medical supplies consisted of. Might have been harmless, might not. That's why charitable organizations taking medical supplies to an enemy need to get them inspected.

How long was she in jail?

14 episodes and a mid season hiatus.

Hanging out in Auckland building stuff?

Sleep education, abuse, and mind probe surgery, or replaced with a clone who can follow the rules?

When you consider Garak's sentence, being the captain's girl was not an advantage.

Kasidy did six months for smuggling medical supplies.
Garak did six months for attempted genocide.

Sounds about even. ;)
Well, Kasidy was not in a position to help the Federation break Cardassian codes and win the war, was she. Welcome to realpolitik.

That's an interesting angle, especially since the Maquis is really a criminal organization and not a nation.

What's interesting that if the Maquis never did anything outside of Cardassian space and was never dumb enough to do anything against the Federation, the Federation would have to literally do nothing at all about them. Eddington was right when he said, "you'll never hear from us again."

Anything happening inside Cardassian borders was of zero interest to the UFP and, in fact, they were forbidden from doing anything about it.

It's all obviously quite muddy and doesn't really hold together under a microscope, but it does make for compelling storytelling if you don't squint too closely.

Except Eddington and the Maquis did do it again, so he was wrong with his statement. In fact, since he took 12 Federation industrial replicators, stuff that is used on a planetary scale, it's a big deal in "FOR THE CAUSE". So they had already committed crimes against the Federation. (In addition to what they did in "DEFIANT" when they stole said ship, plus whatever else we don't know about.)

In "FOR THE UNIFORM", the Maquis stole from TWO Federation cargo ships. "You'll never hear from us again" really means, "You'll never hear from us again... until you have stuff we want to take." (Plus attacking and crippling TWO Starfleet ships and poisoning TWO Cardassian worlds using the stolen Federation cargo. Had Sisko not stopped them when he did, the Maquis would have poisoned every Cardassian world in the DMZ.)

You are right about one thing: the Maquis ARE a criminal organization.

Tomato/tomahto. If the cargo is perfectly legal, can it really be smuggling?

Yes, because it's being secretly delivered.

Biomimetic gel IS under medical supplies, otherwise Bashir wouldn't be the one directly in charge of any supply of it on DS9. (He has it in the Infirmary in "DISTANT VOICES" and is asked for it directly by Quark and Altovar before Altovar tried to steal it, and Sisko is ordering him to have it prepared for shipment in "IN THE PALE MOONLIGHT", which Bashir says he will file a protest with Starfleet Medical and note it in his log.)

Bashir being the Chief Medical Officer and is in charge of biomimetic gel makes it a medical supply.

Garak also attacked a Starfleet officer (Worf), broke into a restricted Starfleet ship's systems, and tried to sabotage a Starfleet ship's systems (taking over the weapons of the Defiant).

Odo said he got off lightly, and I agree with him.

Kasidy, at least, brought herself and her ship back to face charges and offered no resistance. That, the fact it was medical supplies, and a good word from Sisko (and possibly others, like Dax) is what likely got her only a 6 month sentence.
