I would be very interested to know what makes this a rebound in your opinion? I've seen some mixed opinions. I would prefer a rebound so please fill me in!

An observation of the timeline of it. So soon after Chapel reveals her new flame he ends up investing quite deeply in La'an and certainly not as casually as she gave the impression it would be. And it seems a mutual rebound as well, La'an is probably still dealing with the fallout of knowing she won't have her Kirk back. Both of them are trying to escape their pain in this relationship.

Why would it be controversial? Gene Roddenberry Himself established a Kirk/Spock romance in his TMP novelization. So if that's the direction they take their relationship on SNW, they will be true to Gene's Vision.

I'm sorry if I've offended you. The relationship was not explicitly shown on the screen as romantic. I think it would be controversial to suggest that it was. It's certainly been controversial to reimagine Spock and Chapel as having a romantic relationship in their past which was not shown on the screen. Plenty of people in this forum hated Spock and Chapel for this reason. I would think that a bigger relationship like Spock and Kirk would be even more controversial.

I've never read TMP novel or almost any Trek book. As I haven't read it, it wouldn't be canon for me. I don't generally like the idea of canonising books written by different authors as many won't know the characters. It sounds like you're saying that Gene himself wrote TMP book. In which case I would certainly think of that as canon.

I am surprised the kirk and spock ship has not even happened in an alternate reality. K/S started slash, long before sherlock holmes/dr watson there was the idea of kirk and spock as a romantic couple but trek is still a male driven franchise so having the two characters been gay may turn people off (the male fan base off)

but streaming star trek have screamed about how progressive and diverse they are to the point I would say they even get some actors solely based on this than finding a balance of diversity, progressive values and acting talent.

But do not be surprised if in SNW we see an alternate reality that shows kirk and spock are a couple. I doubt it but I would not be surprised. Also people only hate spock/chapel because the snw writers made them too. spock/chapel insults trek canon to the core and most of all destroys Spock's character to no limits, so naturally fans hate that and this are trek fans that hate any little change. some of these fans do not like kelvin trek that is an alternate reality trek, SNW will only by default get more hate as it claims it is tos trek.

I think some may act more chill if they make kirk/spock canon than just go on a full hate like they did with spock/chapel. the male trek fan base must know that kirk and spock are seen as a couple in the eyes of many females fans. so some may just go cool with a one off episode. it is not like a one off episode of kirk and spock been gay in an elseworld kind of story will destroy 60 years star trek history.

However I do not think SNW Kirk and Spock even have any chemistry in the bromance department unlike Kelvin Kirk/Spock or TOS Kirk/Spock.

Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley do nothing for me as a duo and season 4 has sworn the story is all about them. we shall see.

I think we got all we'll ever get of Spirk when they linked minds and their two ships humped each other in space. That's plenty for me. Also, though I am bi, I'm okay if queer people are not interested in looking outside their preference and the same for straight people. It's okay to be just who we are and love who we love, right? That being said, I am a little disappointed in the lack of queer people on the show. But I am happy to assume we just haven't met them yet.

I think more is coming. They seem so deeply connected in TOS so to get to that place, I think we'll see more. Yes there hasn't been much representation. It's felt a little outdated there. Uhura and Erica felt like a good possible match for me.

That's really interesting. I'm not sure if I agree that he's invested deeply in La'an or not. Both the characters have emphasised that it's casual and the showrunners have as well. We see them spend a bit of time together but not a whole lot. He certainly jumps into her katra to save her so they certainly have a bond in this moment but they were already friends and Peck's Spock is particularly connected to his crew mates. We know that Spock was willing to risk everything to save Pick and this wasn't romantic that we're aware of so he's that sort of person. They both certainly refuse any type of commitment and La'an seems disturbed at the thought of a deeper relationship with him when she discovers his socks. They're certainly more than casual sex buddies and have care a lot about each other. From this, I would think casual. On the other hand, pain seems to be driving this relationship. They both seem to want to be seen and accepted. They don't seem to have much in common or even like each other as people so much as they want comfort from each other. We also see signs that the relationship isn't exactly meeting either of their needs which is perhaps more aligned with a rebound relationship. La'an's interaction with Kirk suggests that she's still quite hung up on him and her conversation with Una makes me think that he's the exciting choice that she'd like to have. The showrunners also said that they want to give La'an something good and they're making the world a better place for themselves which is maybe more rebound language. Tough, arguments could be made both ways.

Adria and Gray served no real purpose but to be just what they were, a stand in for non binary couples. they were just poorly created and also it does not help that discovery did not really have the greatest writing.

Also the actors were bland, one note and boring as you can get. they added nothing to the show. Emperor Georgiou who we used to call Space Hitler in the hey days was kind of entertaining to watch, love or hate her, she was never boring and of course she was played by the fabulous Michelle Yeoh, who is just hard to hate in any role.

Lastly TNG has already dealt with non binary romance and had Riker of all people play one of the main characters in love with the non binary character and while it was not my favourite TNG episode, TNG executed it well as usual.

Adiria and Gray felt more like ticking a box than telling a story with depth as TNG did.
I just wish when people say ......oh people hate spock/chapel or adria/gray they give real reasons why. fans do not just wake up and start hating on a pairing, something has to trigger it.

The book says Spock uses a Vulcan word to describe Kirk which translates as lover. Kirk's reaction upon learning this is he couldn't imagine being with someone who only has sex once every seven years.

I believe the word is called T'hylia that Spock uses for Kirk.

T'hylia can translate to friend, lover or brother. So many Spirk shippers like to use this as proof that kirk and spock are romantically in love.

And speaking of the other novels, I believe there was one that was written by Gene Rodenberry. Spock once referred to Nurse Chapel as a delusional woman who thinks she ever stood a chance of seuducing him. So from TV, Novels, Cartoons. The dynamic of spock/chapel has always been one sided, until SNW chose to flip it and very aggressively.

Well the plot of WNMHGB is Kirk's best friend Gary Mitchell becomes a God and power corrupts. Being low on "gas" didn't exactly start with Star Trek and it's just there to provide some tension and give them a place to imprison Gary. When the show does "my friend became a power mad God and now I got to kill him" then we can say they've ripped off the plot.

being low on gas is not something you can rip off , it's a generic plot device.
