Why do you think TNG has a less than... stellar record when it comes to comedy?

TNG feels to me like it's often wanting to take the piss out of itself but gets stopped somehow. You can tell the actors are messing about in certain episodes and some plots start to lean toward comedy at times, but something about the production keeps it all bland and uptight. Maybe it was GENE'S VISION.

I can't believe that things like "Genesis" weren't written as comedy, even if they're largely acted and directed seriously. Troi turns into a fish and Picard smears some of her pheromones on himself to lure horny-monster-Worf into chasing him through the ships' service tunnels. Even if the actual episode is played straight, there's just no way someone wasn't having a laugh there.

OMG. I'll still defend the bulk of this episode, especially the great direction, but thanks to you I now just realized how "Genesis" is TNG's equivalent of TOS's "Spock's Brain". Just without the unintentionally silly dialogue, just a ropey cause for a high-concept idea. Really should have been another species doing a mind control ray in attempt to take over (would still be better than "The Game") and they're all hallucinating or something (a new Romulan ploy?), even I have to use the phrase "po-faced serious" over the underlying ideas of evolution being thrown to the wind*.

Does it have a meme worthy line like "Brain and brain, what is brain?"

"CANDLE 'N' CANDLE, DINNA LIGHT THA' CANDLE!"
Up next: A rap remix on YouTube... but until then, all I can do is share these gems and the ghost with the most is even mentioned in at least one of them:

Makes (take your pick from, say, season one) seem positively erudite by comparison. No wonder the one guy chose "Code of Honor" as his favorite episode...

(Let's do a double feature of the wonderfulness of Allison, since the actual advert I could not find, because - even as a supporter of a lot of season one, myself - she's still got a great presentation. :D )

TNG took itself extremely seriously. The atmosphere had a structured seriousness to it, with a stiff formality to it. So, comedy was usually outside the crew and they reacted like it was foreign, rather than funny.

Though I did like "Captain Picard Day."
Speaking of which we never did get that "Commander Riker Day" Picard mentioned at the end of that scene.
