Contemporary "Wizard of Oz" Series in Development From Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton

:shrug:Probably isn't any worse than any of the other revisionist-Oz there is out there. Could be the most faithful to the original since Return to Oz, not that Return is all that faithful (better than Wicked, or the 1939 MGM hatchet-job, though).

One of these days they'll give Dorothy Gale a submachine gun in order to give her empowerment and additional agency. It's inevitable.

An Oldie but a Goodie :D :

That's the only one I need.

Oh, wait, you're hating on Tin Man. Bastard.

...speaking of which, I really should go back and rewatch that miniseries.

What makes you think this be that faithful? Everything they said is so generic I don't really see where you can get any clear ideas what to expect.
I'm gonna need to see some footage or at least a more detail plot outline before can have any serious feeling about this either way.

How will this be different from Emerald City?
As someone who hasn't watched either of the shows mentioned here, looking at the visuals of this show, I'm guessing this new TV series will be different from the one you mentioned. It will be set in the present day and will focus on the character before she meets the Wizard of Oz, and they'll make a version of her torn between two men. Because that's all teen shows on Amazon are about.

Nothing. It's just that everything else sets such a ludicrously low bar. Even Return to Oz had its problems, conflating characters and erasing a whole neighboring country, and it's probably the least offensive.

What I liked about Gregory Maguire's take on the Wizard of Oz with his Wicked novel, was his reimagination of the world as a Tolkien-esque fantasy world that expanded on the history of the land, something which I felt really interesting and refreshing compared to a lot of more recent takes. The thing to do, after the Wicked series of movies are done, would be to make a Wizard of Oz TV series based on that. Go all the way in rather than making something contemporary that feels out of place.

Its biggest problem was Disney Films refusal to promote it properly. Harlan Ellison seemed to be one of the few critics to highlight its excellence.
