News Exclusive: Scott Bakula Eyeing Star Trek Return In President Archer Series Pitch From ‘Enterprise’ Producer

And I think those diminishing returns have to do with the streaming model being like this:

1. One ten-episode season with each episode shown each week, so the season lasts about 2 to 2 1/2 months.

2. One-to-two year break between seasons.

The audience at best has forgotten what happened the previous season and needs to binge watch it again to keep up. At worst, they say screw that and just lose interest in the show. So unless the show is a powerhouse like The Boys or For All Mankind, you’re gonna lose viewers with this streaming model.

You're not wrong in that the model is clearly broken. Streamers are also figuring this out. Couple in a struggling economy, and you have a recipe for these high dollar shows to be given the hook, unless they are in the upper stratosphere of popularity.

Which shows they weren't the brightest bulbs. Shows live and die on the whims of whomever owns them at any particular time. Being professionals, they should know that.

I wouldn’t judge them that harshly. Producers are always making things based on the hope that they will become hits and last a long time. Even contracts that only last a certain year can be renegotiated.

You'd still want to have your ear to the ground, especially anyone that has been in the business for a while.

I do wonder if a certain creative and professional malaise towards the material set in because people thought they had job security based on working on a Star Trek property?

I suppose they have to keep planning for more so that there's a plan in place to keep content coming out regularly. No one likes 3 year gaps between seasons. Discovery ended seasons 3, 4 and 5 with their stories wrapped up and no lead in to the next season but obviously you want your final finale to be a grander farewell.

You would hope decisions to terminate shows be made less on a last minute whim.

If so, I would argue that that happened at the end of the Berman era as well.

Money changes on a whim and expensive shows are first to go.

Dominic Keating has spoken of how excited he was to know he'd be on a show with a guaranteed run and he'd have enough time to build up his money from the series. Damn shame.

Oh, I know that, and just because ENT got more episodes doesn't mean it didn't get screwed. And it got screwed.
Ive rewatched a good deal of the behind the scenes stuff on the Blu rays and was surprised by some of the ways upn apparently screwed them over.

Les Moonves was a horse's ass before he axed the show and he was a horse's ass afterwards. UPN itself was so mismanaged that ENT is just one of many victims of his tenure.
Afaik it was upns top rated show during its run but the ratings weren't justifying the costs of the show and les moonves hated Trek, something like that? Also upn wasn't factoring in stuff like DVR viewings.
