My brother in Sha-Ka-Ree, we are now on our SECOND reboot of TOS, Shatner and Nimoy were great but they've been gone a long time. And their replacements have lasted 3 movies (two of which set records) and their successors are filming their fifth season as we speak.
You cannot put the genie back in it's bottle.
Maybe not, but I won't watch it. I'm tired of seeing those rebooted characters played by..........well, let's say "actors who aren't as good as the originals". Most of them don't even look like the original actors and characters, like that one who looked like my school buddy Thomas and not like Captain Kirk.
Not to mention that the stories are no good either.
Trek has always had its share of dark scenarios (
The Best of Both Worlds,
Conspiracy, Chain of Command, First Contact, etc.)
There can be no light without darkness. Without darkness, how can one know the light?
People aren't perfect. I've never been crazy about TNG's perfect people (I can't relate to them). I find them grating and insufferable.
It's been sixty years.
Reboots keep the show relevant for new generations. People want to see
Star Trek characters who look like themselves.
No one is expecting any reboot to replace Shatner, Nimoy, and the others.
And therefore they shouldn't try to replace them either.
Why not come up with new ideas and new good characters instead of making a shambles of TOS while trying to suck the last possible profit out of if?
As for me, I'm not interested in seeing Star Trek characters who looks like me.
And I'm definitely not interested in seeing characters with no resemblance at all to the original actors and their characters.
As for dark scenarios in Star Trek, there have been many such scenarios.
But there have also been lighter episodes between those darker episodes, a good mixture.
What we have today is too much doom and gloom.
I will never understand this point of view.
It's like saying the first guy to play Juliet in 1597 is the only person who should ever play her.
How many actors have played Batman, or Superman, or James Bond over the years?
If it's great art/entertainment, it will be recast and reinterpreted many times.
That's normal.
You're exaggerating.
If you want to see actors with no resemblance to the original actors/characters, then it's up to you.
I won't!
And I'm tired of those reboots. Why drink third rate moonshine when you can buy excluseive whiskey and why go to a fifth-class restaurant when you can go to a five-star one with the best food available=the original TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY.
And not just that, as mentioned earlier in this topic, the attitude of 'I don't want it so they can't make it'.
The audacity some have to deny others something they might really want because they don't want it.
Well, if you want third league ice hockey instead of first league ice hockey, then it's your choice.
And your loss!
"James Kirk is not an interesting character. I just like William Shatner."
It is nice but not a need.
I'll never get this. The Star Trek i watched was full of dark scenarios, starting early on with McCoy having to kill a creature that looked like an old love, or Kirk having to kill his best friend, or watching with sad acceptance as a enemy combatant destroys his ship out of duty and can't really offer any consolation to the widowed bride. Those episodes were my first introduction to Star Trek.
Yes, but hey were good stories played by good actors and it wasn't all about doom-and-gloom. There were lighter stories between them and also some humor even in more serious stories.
Look at DS9. It had
everything!
You're absolutely wrong!
It's a masterpiece!
