‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

Six episodes? God Almighty, what a bunch of crap. It’s bad enough that they only have 10 episodes, now they’re gonna let the show run for six and then just end it? Looks like Trek is about to come to the end of its road. It also looks like they need money for their new garbage series about Starfleet Academy. I’m just about to give up. I haven’t seen an episode of SNW that really stuck out anyway. They brought every TOS character into the new series anyway. The only people left is McCoy and Sulu. The magic is gone.

Yeah, now imagine the six episodes of SNW S5 being like the episode we all just watched.

The studio wanted to end the show after season 4, but committed to season 5 due to the fact that they had made a promise to the fans. I can appreciate that considering the way Netflix cancel shows on cliffhangers and unfinished storylines on a regular basis.

Over ten bad ones? Well, sure.

I meant over ten good/bad "gimmick" ones. We're down to only ten episodes. Picture yourself binging this show ten years from now and dealing with 4/5 gimmicks and 4/5 serious episodes in one season. I don't know about you, but I've kinda had it with gimmicky nuTrek. I want meat and potatoes that advance the story toward why we originally wanted SNW. All I know is I didn't want it for gimmicks. You differ, and that's perfectly okay.

Good is good. Most, of not all gimmick episodes "advance the story" with lasting repercussions.

Even M'Benga's non-war past was turned into a gimmick. M'Benga's daughter named the alien, Debra, after her mother, and M'Benga was shown to be visibly moved by this. Come Season 5, and Debra's apparently one of 3 ex-wives or the annulled wife, her importance in M'Benga's and his daughter's lives relegated to a punchline.

That's a bit of a stretch. We don't know the particulars of any of M'Benga's past relationships so we don't know if he was the reason one or more broke up; if one of them died, and he married on the rebound, etc.

Your senerio assumes everything is M'Benga's fault and he's just a womanizer.

I mean, I don't mind comedy AT ALL. I have always loved comedic Trek. I have a fondness for it, in fact. It's why I'm a Niner bc DS9 to me does Comedy Trek best. But gimmick is an entirely different ballgame. And I've noticed it being the go-to for a lot of the new writers of DSC and SNW. That said, if you do it well, I'm okay with it. But gimmicky trek that leaves a sour taste in the mouth like this one did? Just no. I'm going to now shut up about this bc it feels like I'm belaboring the point. I loved the first episode this season, btw, so I'm not one of those "I hate NuTrek" people. I hope you know that. I mean, I've been on this site for more than 20 years now... so I hope I can get away with throwing a bit of a tantrum every now and then ;)
