‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

I really only have two complaints about SNW at the moment but they are pretty minor.

1. I wish they would stop making Spock the butt of the joke. They've done it a few times and the very first thing that was released in terms of Season 3 was that whole thing with the away team becoming Vulcans. I'm glad the stuff they have released since then was better.

2. I wish (And continue to wish) SNW had become an actual continuation of Discovery from before Discovery left for the 32nd century. We haven't seen the Discovery Klingons yet (I think we have seen Klingons in the second season premiere) and was there ever a hint of finding Prime Lorca or bringing back Mary Chieffo as the Klingon Chancellor? I think it would have been a little interesting for the series to pick up on some of those ideas.

I'm looking forward to season 3 and what they have planned for Season 4 and 5. The series isn't perfect, but there was a time during season 2 where I was happy they were doing some wacky things with it, like the Lower Decks Crossover and the Musical. In a short 10 episode episodic season, I appreciate the variety.

There was never a "Legacy" series under consideration,

We know that.

so it's pretty foolish to ask why they didn't follow through

Because all the fans that Matalas duped into thinking that it was an actual thing (and still do, if Reddit is any indication), don’t. I only brought it up as a point as to why CBS/Paramount seems no longer interested in spending lots of money in future Trek productions even if there’s a chance they may be profitable.

Fans duped themselves, possibly due to wishful thinking and it becoming an uncontrollable rumor. Would recommend "Rumor at the Top" or "Bombshells" episodes of MASH for a great illustration of this effect.

It's also common to think we as fans know better what will make money.

He didn't (intentionally) dupe anyone. He always said it was something he wanted to do, not that it was going to happen. He was speaking hypothetically.

Nope. He said he was in ‘talks’ with CBS/Paramount. Wording like that tends to imply that they were seriously considering having him showrun a post-PIC series right off of the previous one, which was not true. His intent was to get fans riled up so CBS would consider the pitch, and Matalas did not disavow fans of the notion that it was just a pet project. But it didn’t work.

Ugh, so true.

This is why I always try my best to couch my commentary on such matters with the emphasis that I offer nothing more than that self-same supposition that most here could possibly bring to the table.

There are times when I feel as though I’m especially likely to be right. They’re rare, but they do happen. For instance, I cannot conceive of a reality in which Paramount would put Star Trek back on network television, with season orders akin to what we used to get. I do not believe such an effort would be profitable.

Doesn’t mean I believe for a heartbeat that I know for sure what will make money; I don’t look into this stuff professionally. Few here, if any, do.

His phrasing was designed to "inspire" the fanbase.

Paramount doesn't have many big franchises to work with.

Star Trek feels like it is slowly winding down.
Mission Impossible had its final film.
There's a big opportunity to take MI away from Tom Cruise now after 30 years and take it back to tv. With some Andor style writing it might really take off.

Disco itself didn't bother with the Disco Klingons after moving to the 32nd century. And since Akiva Goldsman has spoken very publicly about how much he hates the Disco Klingons and made it his personal mission to make sure we don't see them on SNW, that pretty much makes it clear we won't see them on SNW.

Gritty realism was never supposed to be Mission Impossible's thing.

Disco didn't bother with any Klingons at all after the move to the 32nd century. I know people felt there was too much focus on the Klingons in the first two seasons, but their complete absence in the final three seasons was conspicuous.

I did not now this. I remember that was one of the selling points of the first season. It is a bummer we won't see Chieffo again.

One does have to wonder just how long of a reign L'Rell had given that the Federation and Klingons will be going to war again in about six or seven years time at this point.

I'd like to see what SNW's makeup department would do with her look. I imagine they'd keep the same ridge design and that's it.

Also IIRC, we have seen a DSC Klingon in SNW, but it was just reused DSC footage.

But for the life of me, I can't remember in what episode.

It was a show about capers, with secret agents instead of Ocean's 11. Capers in which we vicariously participated. Fun sells if done well.

I would agree. Jack Crusher and Geordi's daughter simply are not compelling characters. Jack is a complete black mark in terms of Starfleet officer. In terms of Seven I like her well enough, but would not tune in for it because her as captain doesn't sound very enjoyable.

On this I will agree (save the emoji). Star Trek needs a break to give people something else to go find to complain about.

We really do need a new franchise show that doesn't end after 3 seasons and 30 episodes and quickly forgotten about.

Star Trek and Star wars have been the most milked franchises and both are suffering in quality. I would like to see something else milked now. Farscape would be my choice. 😀
