Gran Turismo 5 Prologue? Huh?

I don't understand this game. I've never played any of the Gran Turismo games before but I am intrigued by this because I would like to have a really good driving game for my PS3. But this game confuses me. From the reviews I've read and the title, it's a prologue to the GT5? When does GT5 come out? Someone explain please!

It's basically a glorified Beta.

It's to give fans a taste of the new game engine. It's only got a very small portion of the cars, tracks, extras, etc. that the real one will have.

As for a release date, Christmas time is most likely--AFAIK, one hasn't officially been announced.

Basically it's the game studio trying to keep the fans from buying to many other games in the meantime while they take even longer to release the game. But I have to say I'm not that impressed with the GT series after having played Forza Motorsport 2. It just feels better to me. Will have to see if I think the same after having played Prologue at my cousins place with a wheel and pedals.

No, only I've played with a wheel so far is the one track demo that was free for a time on the PS3 online network. That was pretty good I admit, but I never well too much in love with any of the cars. With Forza I think it's really good even just with a regular controller, and sadly I don't get that same feel with GT. Also I think the sounds are superior in Forza. Each car truly has it's own distinctive sound and most of all they include the bass tones way better then GT has done so far.

Well, you don't drive cars with a controller. :p

As far as realism in physics and response there's just no comparison IMO.

And, I'm pretty indifferent as far as the sound goes.

Well if I totally love prologue I'll be the first one to admit I was wrong. But for me sound is a HUGE deal with cars since I love V8s. And V8s gotta have a mean low growl.

Dude, you're not going to buy Prologue and then turn around and buy the full version are you?

Ugh.

This kind of stunt is just pure evil. And the bite of it is, it'll work. Countless thousands if not a couple million hard core gamers (and hard core GT gamers) will buy Prologue to get their taste and then buy the full version when IT is released. Which pretty much means instead of making $50, $60 or whatever off of this game Sony (and/or Poylphony) is going to make closer to $90. (the $30 for "Prologue" and the $60 for the full version.)

Ugh. Capitalism in all it's glory and at it's dirtiest and evilest.

Just disgusting.

How is selling a video game "evil?" Doesn't this dilute the meaning of the word "evil" perhaps more than we ought to?

Isn't it capitalism which allows you to express your economic power by choosing whether to buy it or not?

What alternate system do you recommend for the sale of video games?

What's the point of that? Who in their right mind would pay full-price for a...for a....for a DEMO??? Crazy bastards.

Not that I agree with the whole Prologue idea, and I think it's overpriced, but... it's not full price. Prologue is priced $20 less than full price in the States, and it's cheaper in the UK too.

Thing is, Gran Turismo 5 proper isn't going to be ready for at least another year, Prologue really isn't a demo, it contains as much content as most full fledged racers, but not as much as a regular GT game these days. It's got:

16 Player online multiplayer, various game modes, 71 + cars, five tracks (most likely also playable mirrored) and GT TV, which is sort of a dedicated online race channel for gear heads that'll offer content like Top Gear and stuff.

Personally I totally understand why they're charging, but I think they're charging a bit much, $30 seems about right, but then they also charged $40 for Warhawk so...

Burnout Paradise fills my driving game cravings (which aren't that strong). No purchasing a glorified GT demo for me...

Sonybots: "It's a way for Sony to satisfy fans of the GT series since Polyphony Digital take eons to release games."

Xbots and Wii-tards: "It's an incredibly greedy money grab for a glorified demo."

Personally I think $20 would've been fine, but $40 (the cost of a full PS2 game) is just greedy.

Pretty much, GT5 proper is going to have a hell of a lot of content to justify the $60 price tag... and of course it will.

Personally I liked the original idea of just giving away the core game and letting people purchase what they wanted to add to it, seemed like it would work really well with something like GT as long as they didn't nickel and dime people to death.

They're not selling a game. They're selling a glorified demo to whet the appetites of rabid fans. Knowing full well those fans will buy the demo for the taste and then later buy the full version to have it.

They're preying on people's need for this game and, IMHO, it's evil.

As for an alternate system for selling video games. I can think of none, as my "socialist capitalist" ideals don't transalte to video games.

But I think it's just an "evil" extortist mentality from the videogame company. Yes people can choose to not buy a game, but the game company still is releasing this game on the knowledge that people will buy it and then buy the full version.

Preying on people is still wrong, even if people let themselves be preyed on.

I'm still quite happy with Test Drive Unlimited. I never liked those uber-realistic driving sims.

Need?

I think it's totally overpriced, and even if I did have a PS3... which I don't.... and liked racing games... which I don't... I wouldn't buy it. But "preying on people's need?" No. It's an entertainment product that isn't worth the value it's being sold for. That's all.

40 bucks seems to be the price that's been set for large size games in PSN.
What might have been killer though was if they gave this away for free on PSN along with the MGS4 PS3 bundle.

Anyhoo, given that a lot of fans spent much more money last year buying Japanese PSN cards in order to get GT5P early, I don't think this will cause much of a blip. Is it a demo/beta? Yeah, but oh well... they gave out GT4:HD for free, so I guess this is their time to cash in.

Well, I got GT5:P for about 40% of the price of a normal PS3 game, so for me it's a decent deal. I've also been playing the game quite a lot and I definitely feel it was worth getting. GT5 proper won't be out for at least another year and GT5:P is just so much fun. Btw, I have absolutely no problems playing it on the controller. I do want to get a steering wheel though, I just have to figure out where to mount it.

A cheap and easy way is to take one of those TV tray table things and do a few easy mods to it. Or, you can by one of those pre-built cockpits.

A lot of people, however, build their own cockpits. I built mine out of PVC piping and a little plywood.

Oh, and the Logitech G25 is really the only wheel worth getting. It doesn't have full support in the Prologue (basically works like a DFP), but they say it will be fully supported (clutch et all) in the full release.
