Season 3 First Look

Don’t know about “best thing in Star Trek for decades”, but it’s one of my favorite aspects of the show, for sure. And that’s mostly due to the wonderful performances by Jess Bush and Ethan Peck. They are just a joy to watch. And I love the fact that the writers just took this idea that’s barely even there in the original series and expanded it into this seemingly series-spanning storyline that’s not only interesting in its own right, but also in the way it adds to the original material. I can’t watch an episode of the original now and not see those characters with this backstory in mind.

Exactly so.

Heck no. The Spock/Chapel bullshit was the moment I realised this show was not for me. Simply, these are not the characters I’ve known since I was a kid. This isn’t the same universe or continuity. Which is fine. I just wish the writers had created their own, new characters for this tedious CW-level fare.

Who was Chapel in TOS?

One could make the argument that these aren't the characters you knew them as in their TOS incarnations, not yet anyway they're on their journey to becoming them.

Now yes I know the argument can be made why can't they have always been like that but isn't that a little...stagnant? If characters are and always will be exactly the way we saw them in one single snapshot of their lives then that just wouldn't be interesting. It's the same argument I make to defend seasons 1 and 2 of Picard. Lives progress, shit happens, people change.

TOS characters, basically apart from Spock, are so underdeveloped that SNW is bringing them more personality and love than they ever had. About all we knew about Chapel was she married Korby and was in love with Spock, this is what we're seeing unfold and explained to us.

There's absolutely nothing that's "CW-level" about the Spock and Chapel relationship.

I've had one of these for a very long time now ...

I have never worn it outside my bedroom.
I wore and washed mine to the point that it is now just an actual red shirt. The decal material washed away. :(

To me CW level is a character falling in love so hard that Spock would have to wipe their mind to forget.

I was about to make a joke about Chapel saying "you're not the Vulcan, Spock. We are." and then rememebred that Chapel will turn into a Vulcan this season so we are in fact skirting CW territory.

People keep saying "CW style/fare/thang" in reference to things in modern Trek they don't like. But at this point, I'm not sure these people even know what a CW show is and are just think CW refers to anything of emotional content, involving romance, or featuring attractive people.

But then, I suppose all three are concepts Trekkies understand nothing about.
