Season 3 First Look

Now??? ... Ummm... TAS which is part of the TOS Era, had a holodeck episode.

One could speculate that it was because of it, that Roddenberry added it to TNG.

It was a holo projector? But anyway the holodeck was clearly a brand new invention in tng. Unless spock is experimenting with one or trying with an alien version there is no reason to believe that the 1701 had one. Only other thing I can think of is starfleet scientists were developing a holodeck on earth and spock is getting to test it out. Maybe it took 100 years to perfect the technology. Who knows.

As long as it doesn't involve the dangerous Holodeck malfunction trope I'm fine with such an episode on SNW.

A malfunction would show why it's not deployed widely for several more decades.

I suspect it will be something like that, like how Trip got to use an Alien holodeck in ENT. And the Holodeck wasn't actually new in TNG, just impressively more realistic than Riker had seen before. Janeway played a Flotter program as a child.

All SNW needs to do is have this be a prototype holodeck on a Starbase, and there shouldn't be interactive characters yet.

Also, and I’m not sure if anyone has pointed that out yet, but they showed something that very much resembled a holodeck way back in season one of Discovery, when Lorca and Tyler were running that tactical Klingon program. I know, I know, I’ve been trying to forget it as well. ;)

But that was just laser tag. IIRC, there was nothing to indicate that those holograms were solid or interactive.

The holodeck wasn't new. The realism of it, especially with people, was more new.

TAS had holograms before TNG.

I thought it was well done.

You’re right, one could argue it was a rudimentary version of what we then saw on TNG. Although, IIRC, it also already featured that aspect of it being able to realistically portray a much larger space in a small-ish chamber, possibly with the users on a sort of treadmill.

We don't see any interactive characters in the trailer, it actually looks like everyone involved is a member of the crew, but of course we won't know until we see the whole thing.

I do love how excited La'an is though in the scene where she's in her outfit standing next to Spock in uniform. It does make me kind of think that the "holodeck" in its recognizable form might be new as of that episode.

Well, there’s at least one character that has not been recognized as being one of the crew: That woman standing next to the sitting Pike in the shot with Kirk in front. I theorized elsewhere that it might be Batel in a wig. But it could also very well be a holodeck character.

Plus, although we don’t get to see them, there seems to be a murder victim as well. Could be Spock playing dead (since we don’t see him in costume, I think) or indeed a virtual character.

Right. It will be something being developed and won't be as impressive as what the TNG holodeck gave us.

I don't know if it was that clear
TAS
SULU: Well, what'll it be, a swim at the beach?
(It's a holodeck. They get a beach with waves and seagulls)
MCCOY: It is lovely, but I'm more in the mood for a nice quiet walk in the woods.
UHURA: Doctor, that sounds perfect.
SULU: Then woods it is.
(He works the panel, and they get their grass and trees.
MCCOY: Ah, now that's more like it. Shall we?

TNG
[Forest]

RIKER: Hello?
(He crosses a stream by stepping stones. One wobbles. Someone is trying to whistle 'Pop goes the Weasel'. Riker finishes the tune)
DATA: Marvellous. How easily humans do that. I still need much practice.
RIKER: There are some puzzles down on the planet that the Captain wants answered. He suggests that I take you with me on the away team that I'll be leading.
DATA: I shall endeavour to function adequately, sir.
RIKER: Yes. When the captain suggested you, I looked up your record.
DATA: Yes, sir. A wise procedure, sir, always.
RIKER: Then your rank of Lieutenant Commander is honorary?
DATA: No, sir. Starfleet class of '78. Honours in probability mechanics and exobiology.
RIKER: Your file says that you're an
DATA: Machine, Correct, sir. Does that trouble you?
RIKER: To be honest, yes, a little.
DATA: Understood, sir. Prejudice is very human.
RIKER: Now that does trouble me. Do you consider yourself superior to us?
DATA: I am superior, sir, in many ways, but I would gladly give it up to be human.
RIKER: Nice to meet you, Pinocchio. A joke.
DATA: Ah. Intriguing.
RIKER: You're going to be an interesting companion, Mister Data.
DATA: This woodland pattern is quite popular, sir. Perhaps because it duplicates Earth so well. Coming here almost makes me feel human myself.
RIKER: I didn't believe these simulations could be this real.
DATA: Much of it is real, sir. If the transporters can convert our bodies to an energy beam, then back to the original pattern again
RIKER: Yes, of course. And these rocks and vegetation have much simpler patterns.
DATA: Correct, sir. The rear wall.
RIKER: I can't see it.
DATA: We're right next to it.
(He throws a rock at it, and the image pixilates on impact)
RIKER: Incredible!
WESLEY [OC]: Commander Riker!
WESLEY: (at the stream) Commander Riker, isn't this great? This is one of the simpler patterns. They've got thousands more. Some you just can't believe.
RIKER: Careful, the next rock is loose!
(Wesley falls in the water)
RIKER: Wesley!
(Data rushes down and hauls the boy out with one hand)
WESLEY: Wow!

The forest program is a "classic". ;)

I thought that was Una in a wig, but it's hard to see.

You know, you could be right. It really is hard to tell.

By the way, is it me or does that one shot with La’an look like she’s standing in front of the virtual LED set instead of a real one? Something about the way we are able to see the floor strikes me as weird. Would be kinda funny if they filmed part of the holodeck episode on their “holodeck set”.

That's been a glaring inconsistency throughout the entire franchise. Yes, everyone acts like the holodecks are new in TNG S1, but then we have the Voyager characters talking about using a holodeck in their childhoods. And then the characters on Lower Decks act like they're new again. Besides, we already saw a holodeck on Disco when they were still in the 23rd century.

And finally there's like no context here at all. Yes, we see what appears to be a TNG era holodeck grid, but for all we know this could be a time-wimey episode. Maybe the Enterprise somehow ends up in the 24th century? Maybe a 24th century ship has ended up in the 23rd century? Maybe we should wait until the episode airs before we cry Canon Violation and sharpen our knives?

Oh right, this is the Trek BBS, where rational discourse is not allowed. Silly me.

Boy, did you come to the wrong party.

Star Trek is dead, didn't ya know? Kurtzman killed it because he hates TNG with the passion of a Romulan supernovae.

Never mind all the other inconsistencies in Star Trek s history. Those are just signs that the writers loved the franchise, unlike these other inconsistencies which show utter contempt for Star Trek.

And, if we nitpick it's out of love because nothing says love like pointing out all your flaws, loved one!

You see, it's like this. In the past there was consistency to the inconsistency. Sure we had bad continuity and outright errors, but they were done in a consistent manner, thus preserving the franchise's integrity. Now we just have inconsistency, courtesy of a guy with a manbun who eats kale very hedonically and is thus making Star Trek so dead, even the maggots have moved on.

Preserve the consistent inconsistency, preserve the integrity. Say No to Kurtzman's manbun and kale, neither will do him any good when he gets fired like he deserves to be.

;)

It's possible that holodecks with the range of capabilities seen in TNG were expensive* and uncommon as recently as twenty years before the first episode. People living and working on the frontier often do without many of the comforts and conveniences of home, and maybe it was having a full holodeck on a starship that was unusual, rather than its existence.

Given that Kirk's Enterprise managed a VR "recreation room," it's conceivable that even then something more elaborate was in use back on the home planets.

*Don't throw "socialist Utopia" at me. Fuck that noise.
