DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

I am the first to get concerned that fans might recognise actors when they double-dip as characters in the same continuity but I suspect that it won’t be a particular concern if Colin Farrell moves from Penguin to Sgt Rock
Not a bad choice. Has that lived in look to his face that I associate with Rock.

Also, Sgt Rock and The Penguin are not in the same continuity.

This is one advantage to Farrell being completely unrecognizable as Oz, you cast him as a second major character with no problem.

I like Farrell as an actor quite a bit but is there really that much difference in age with Craig, who was being dismissed as too old before the pivot away from him?

Welcome to another edition of Strange Adventures in the Mod Queue - the place for unverified claims that we encounter via modmail and across the subreddit!

We know you have been hankering after another SAITMQ for some time (after all, it has been over 6 months since the last one) but as noted, we would not come out with another post until it felt warranted (the Gunn effect is real - wannabe 'scoopers'/fanfics are running scared).

This edition focuses on James Gunn's Superman. The below comments come via a user, who claims their source attended a recent screening.

NB: To emphasise, the below are all unverified claims and should be taken with a pinch of salt. They do not come from us.

  • "The film wasn't a comedy, but did have funny moments in it."
  • "Characters aren't who people think they are."
  • "Online speculation is dead wrong."
  • "Most of the trailer scenes are from early in the film."
  • "Krypto plays an important role, but it felt a little tacked in. That part felt artificial."
  • "There is no after credits scene. At least not that they were shown, one could be there, but [their source] can't confirm."
  • "While Rick Flagg Sr. is in the film, and he plays a rather short role, there were no nods to Creature Commandos that [their source] noticed. Note: [Their source is] not a DC-phile so [they] could've missed something."
  • "There was a nod to [Amanda] Waller, though it wasn't an audience wink and it's a blink and you'll miss it."
  • "[The source's] impressions were that the film is good from a person who doesn't follow DC films. [The source's] not a comic book buff (DC or Marvel) but [they] enjoyed it."
  • "The secondary plot of the film focused primarily on Lois and Clark. Brosnahan stole every scene she was in. ([Their source] loves Ms. Maisel though, so [they] could be biased.)"
  • "Nicholas Hoult was good as [Lex] Luthor, but he overacts a bit. He does anger very well but he was a bit much in other scenes."
  • "His two goons were delightful and worked well with Lex's energy. [The source] felt they helped, but weren't absolutely necessary."
  • "Some of the effects don't work super well, though [their source] doesn't know if it was an early cut, the scenes at the ice palace were a little rough."
  • "Some of the effects with the big monster (I'm assuming she's talking about Kaiju) were rough and [their source] thought his face looked a little goofy."
  • "[Their source] said that it had a lot of characters but didn't feel like they took away from the main plot."

"Some of the effects don't work super well" describes every superhero movie made so far - and most action movies in general, really.

The effects worked super well in Barbie.

In a current interview with GQ, Ben Affleck had some observant things to say about the Snyderverse:

I had a really good time. I loved doing the Batman movie. I loved Batman v Superman. And I liked my brief stints on The Flash that I did and when I got to work with Viola Davis on Suicide Squad for a day or two. In terms of creatively, I really think that I like the idea and the ambition that I had for it, which was of the sort of older, broken, damaged Bruce Wayne. And it was something we really went for in the first movie.

But what happened was it started to skew too old for a big part of the audience. Like even my own son at the time was too scared to watch the movie. And so when I saw that I was like, “Oh shit, we have a problem.” Then I think that’s when you had a filmmaker that wanted to continue down that road and a studio that wanted to recapture all the younger audience at cross purposes. Then you have two entities, two people really wanting to do something different and that is a really bad recipe

While the Snyderverse had many problems, Affleck was certainly not one of them. I really enjoyed his take on an older Batman, and for me, Affleck is the closest approximation to Bruce Wayne we've gotten on the big screen so far, in terms of looks and stature.

I do hope that the new continuity sticks with a middle-aged Batman. I find the character much more interesting at that stage in his life.

Middle-aged Batman is fine, but Affleck never really did it justice. He came sort of close in BvS but was undermined by all the other problems in the movie. Every performance after that kept getting worse.

I know it's too late now but they really picked a bad release date for Superman. It's going to get trampled by Jurassic Park at the start of the month and then at the end you've got F4 which seems to be the first Marvel movie since DP&WV that people are actually interested in seeing.
