DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

True. Cavil wasn’t good to great. He was excellent. 😉

The best Superman casting so far. Exactly how a character of that kind should be presented in this century.

I liked the entire cast of Justice League. Personal issues and real life aside, on screen on thought they embodied their characters well. Flash was more of a Bart than a Barry but I didn't mind that.

Agreed. That core, Snyder-associated group was near-perfect superhero casting that's never been matched in a group of that kind.

As far as I can tell Cavill's popularity seems to revolve mostly around the fact that he's a nerd with muscles and not for any acting ability.
Yeah, I mean, I’ve heard so many people talk about how perfectly he fits their physical image of Superman, which seems to lead some into an assumption that he would have been perfect casting under another director. But Greek god looks and muscles out the wazoo do not alone a great Superman make, under any director.

I’m prepared to accept that some folks legitimately see things in Cavill’s performance I just don’t. These things are nothing if not subjective. But to me he’s an animated mannequin — the Stepford Superman.
You're both mistaken.
Not really something about which one can be “mistaken.” Like I said, it’s a discussion that’s subjective by its nature.

I disagree. I find that Cavill is very good at adapting himself to fit the very different characters he plays, so that I found him just as convincing as the cold, ruthless assassin he played in the Mission: Impossible franchise as I found him as Superman. His Napoleon Solo in Guy Richie's The Man from UNCLE was quite different from either of those, not a bad homage of Robert Vaughn's Solo, although he actually reminded me more of Matt Bomer in White Collar. The one role I've seen him in where I didn't think he quite fit the character was as Sherlock Holmes in the Enola Holmes movies, but he wasn't bad there. (And it kind of worked anyway, because the movies were told from Enola's viewpoint and she had kind of an idealized view of Sherlock.)

I can only surmise that people who think he's a bad actor have not seen a wide cross-section of his work.
Admittedly, I haven’t seen him in much. He was better as Napoleon Solo than as Superman; the archness of the character meant he didn’t have to attempt to simulate an actual human being (or Kryptonian). And I do feel like he might have been a quite good James Bond — hopefully more in the Brosnan mode than the Craig — but that ship has probably sailed.

I've never had any issues with Cavill's acting I thought he was good as Superman, and in the Witcher and the Mission: Impossible movie he was in. I think the problems some people have with his performance as Superman, are due to the way Snyder chose to present the character, not with Cavil's performance. So it's a matter of the material, not the performance.

Cavill's interpretation f Superman sold because it perfectly worked with the world created for him, rather than being like other superhero performances / films, where the character is a little more than a walking brand who just happened to be in a film, capturing not a thing necessary to show the best of the character / serve the interests of today's audience.

Some alleged details of the film (found this on CBR's forum from a guy who leaked Flash accurately)

-Film is broken down into chapters/issues as it goes, complete with title cards

-Bradley Cooper is playing Jor-El

-Borrows a bit from early seasons of Smallville (Jor-El wanted Clark to conquer, Lex exploits that to turn public opinion against Superman),

-Lois pretends not to care about Clark at work but they're secretly a couple at home

-Lex and Superman's Clark Kent persona will have more interaction (it's never really been done in the movies aside from a short sequence in BVS)

-Kara is a drunk, like in Tom King's run, she takes Krypto with her at the end, setting up her movie

Whatever that is behind that spoiler tag above, can people discussing it please continue to use such tags, and refrain from alluding too transparently to its contents, even if nonspecifically? (And thanks to Samurai8472 for doing so.) I would prefer not to have to abandon this thread till July.
