Spoilers AHSOKA series [Spoiler Discussion]

I guess I just got used to the way they did things in the prequel era were pretty much everything was CGI.
Less than you'd think. There was still a ton of miniature work done, especially for the environments; Theed, the Mos Espa arena, the Geonosis arena, the Federation hangar interior, Utapau, Mustafar, Kashyyyk, Tipoca City, Coruscant's city buildings and lower level streets including the Outlander Club exterior, Padme's apartments, the Jedi Temple, Dex's Diner . . . and many, many more. All bigatures. Indeed I think I read a statistic somewhere that there were more miniatures constructed (and on a much larger scale) for TPM alone than the entier OT combined.

Where the PT gets the "everything was digital" reputation from is largely the bluescreen work used for filming the actors. Thing is; most of the images later composited into those blue-screen backgrounds used practical photography as it's bedrock.
As I understand it, it was mostly done as a cost saving measure, since to build all of those sets at anything close to full scale, would have been *cripplingly* expensive, mostly due to the sheer number of exotic and utterly unfilmable locations required for those movies. It also makes the post-production and editing process much easier if they background of most shots (especially action shots) can be easily altered.

As you can proably guess I did not know that. I guess I saw so much focus on characters like Jar-Jar, and Grievous being CGI and all of the blue-screen back drops, and assumed all of the backgrounds and everything were too.

I know it was inevitable, and Rory is a good choice, but this saddens me.
My thoughts exactly. It was a tough decision but I'm glad the producers waited a long time before making an announcement on this recasting.

I'm glad they are going to continue Baylan Skoll's story instead of writing around our loss of Stevenson. McCann has big shoes to fill.
I'm also relieved that they didn't go this route.

Do you think Rory McCann can look "Close Enough" to the way Ray Stevenson looked when he portrayed Baylan Skoll?

I know the facial features will not obviously match.
But can he get the beard, the white hair, the physical stature of Ray Stevenson at that time of last filming?

Indeed. I think it would have been best to kill Skoll and move on.
It's impossible to judge that intelligently without knowing excactly what his role in season 2 was intended to be. If he was going to just disappear into the mountains with Ahsoka & Sabine distantly on his trail without him ever needing to actually show up, then sure. But if he's going to be a constant presence and key to the main thrust of the story . . . not so much.

Personally I don't think this is a decision Filloni would make lightly, and since this is the decision he's made, I'll gladly defer to his much more informed judgement on the matter.

Of course.

I was merely speculating, recklessly so, on my own preference based upon what I saw in the show.

It seemed pretty clear at the end of season one that there was still a lot more story for the character, so I'm not surprised. I know a lot of people would have preferred to have the character written out, but I'm OK with the recasting, there were still a lot of unanswered questions at the end of Season 1 and it's going to be a lot easier to answer those questions with Skoll still an active part of the series.
Ray Stevenson was great in the role, but I didn't really see him as such an iconic or unique character, that only Stevenson can play him.

It would have presented an interesting storytelling challenge which I would have welcomed.

I have zero issues one or the other. I'm sure it will be not what I expect regardless.

Take this "news" with a huge helping of salt but according to Slash Film, an insider reports that Dave Filoli is trying to get Natalie Portman to appear in the second season. The same article mentions that there are rumors that both Hayden Christensen (not a surprise) and Ewan McGregor would also appear (first I've heard that rumor).

If this is part of a World Between Worlds scenario, then I'm cautiously curious about this potential news. I know that concept isn't popular among some fans but I always loved it.

Oh, I've been hearing Ewan McGregor rumor for quite some time now. The Natalie Portman rumor is new. While McGregor knows how to play the game, he has gone on record as saying he would love to play a Clone Wars era Obi-Wan.

And count me in as a fan of the World Between World's concept. See also: Mortis and the Mortis gods.

Also, Natalie Portman has gone on record as saying she would have absolutely no objections to returning to Star Wars, she's simply never been asked.
