Starfleet Academy & Robert Picardo: I have a theory...

He can do both as countless episodes of Star Trek show.
In which Star Trek episodes have cadets been in positions to do such things?
Keep in mind, I'm not asking about "special exceptions" like Wesley Crusher or Nog.
I'm asking about everyone else which is what this new show is going to be about.

Saving the day and worrying about a relationship. Characters of all ages have done that. The "position" of cadet or captain is not the relevant part.

I'm having trouble parsing what your last sentence means.

deeply emotional drama
I was under the impression from the Disco forum that Star Trek fans weren't interested in emotions.
sex, date rape, homophobia, animal rights, alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, eating disorders, racism (including antisemitism), teenage suicide, teenage pregnancy, and AIDS.
Can we not do this on Star Trek? This reads like Shameless.
Many of those things have already been covered in Star Trek, though often in allegorical form.

Do you really not understand the difference between a 20-year-old and a 45-year-old?

Cadets at large aren't going to be saving anyone; they're going to school. Boring.

I don't really post there much, so I can't answer to what Disco fans think one way or the other.

Yes, but there's dealing with it as mature and seasoned adults, and then there's dealing with it as annoying immature college (I mean cadet) frat bros.

From the point of view from a character in a TV show, not much, because they are the protagonists in an action oriented TV show. even in real life we have stories of heroic 20 year-olds. Soldiers, Law enforcement and everyday people. Some of whom might even have girlfriends.

As mentioned, these cadets are going to be in an action-adventure show. Young people in action-adventure shows tend to partake in action and adventure in between cramming for finals and making out with their girlfriends. TV reality allows this.

So that's a no, got it.

Starfleet Academy = space school. What action are they getting into? Cramming for exams?

I'm hoping that it ends up being something along the lines of "Lower Decks", but with a more serious overall tone.
It's certainly sounds like we are going to get the same type of interactions, but with a gaggle of cadets instead of full blown Star Fleet Officers.
I'm just wary of the writers going to far with the interpersonal romance.
That's why to me, it seems like it may end up being closer to a 'Young Adult Angst' show (thus my 90210 reference), rather than more of an exploration of the human condition we've seen with past Trek shows.

Again, YMMV

Young adult angst drama can and does work. I just feel Star Trek is the absolute wrong place for this. Save that for The CW.

Yeah, it's a TV show.

Harry Potter= Witch School. Yet they managed a fair amount of action.
It very much helped that the Main Character and the Archvillain of that IP were intertwined in such a strange and intimate way.
We'd have to go all the way back to Kirk vs Khan for something along those lines.

That's some bull.

Seriously, when I was in college and grad school the age range varied from 20s to 50s. Some were annoying and some were studious.

And TNG gave us some of the cringiest romance from supposed adult officers so clearly being dumb "frat bros" isn't an age thing.

I think I'll watch this show and judge for myself.

College, grad school. Starfleet Academy is likely going to go the "young people route" in the same way that most people joining the US Military are gonna be 20-somethings, but given its television, all the drama's gonna be played up.

Such as?

Me too, but only because Robert Picardo is involved. I'd listen to him read the phone book.

So...Star Trek? 'because the drama had been played up since TOS.

Riker pouting over Troi being engaged in Haven. Riket giving Picard a Risian sex statue without telling him what it was for. Days imitating sitcom husbands as part of a romantic relationship.

That's off the top of my head.

Romance is always in Trek even when I'd rather it didn't.

Riker pouting over Troi being engaged in Haven.
I mean, this is someone he'd been very close to and even in a relationship with, they're serving together on the USS Enterprise of all ships, and now she's getting married, or so they thought. Anyone in his position would be upset. I don't expect this level of maturity from a cadet show.
Riket giving Picard a Risian sex statue without telling him what it was for.
Picard is a stiff, and Riker knew he's like the one person on the ship (besides Dr. Crusher) who could get away with that kind pf prank. It especially sells, because we don't see this kind of humor very often, so when it does happen, it's funny.

What?

Romance between seasoned adults, I'm fine with. Romance between cadets: :ack:
