Spoilers Canon, Continuity, and Pike's Accident

The ship is wrong and doesn't fit.

Kirk is wrong and doesn't fit.

It takes the familiar and makes it terrifying. It reshapes TOS by reshaping the characters. It's not a good fit.
What??? TMP is the closest to TOS we ever got imo. McCoy,Kirk and Spock all gelled together pretty quickly by the middle of the film back into their familiar Rapport. They also all aged pretty well by this film and didn't look much different from their TOS days. Great film.

McCoy is on point. Kirk spends a lot of the movie being petty, ill informed and incompetent. Spock has a lirpa stuck way up his keister and then gets "enlightened" :ack:

They explain why the enterprise is different the whole first half of the movie. It was refit.

The time frame feels insufficient for such.
There has been at least 5 years after the 5 year mission. I have had friends that change literally in a year. Spock sheds himself of more emotion and then got a small reawakening. McCoy was McCoy, Scotty was Scotty and Kirk was a bit unsure of himself. This was not directly after TOS. So characters won't be exactly the same anymore.

Two and a half since Kirk was a Captain.

SCOTT: The crew hasn't had near enough transition time with all the new equipment. And the engines are not yet tested at warp power. And an untried Captain.
KIRK: Two and a half years as Chief of Starfleet Operations may have made me a stale but I wouldn't exactly consider myself untried. They gave her back to me, Scotty.

It would be the only reason to include the line. Kirk's all about getting back to the ship he left behind. It's like the theme of the whole film.

No way its only been 2 and a half years. In TWOK they mention 15 years since space seed. So twok takes place 10 years from tmp. No.

So, you're saying TMP is wrong? I thought all this classic Trek was perfect and irrefutable!!!

Why can't it take place 10 years after TMP?

The actors have barely aged. The Enterprise is still basically the same. I find it hard to believe that tmp was two and a half years from tos and everything changed and everyone looks older by a decade. But tmp and twok are 10 years apart and only the uniforms changed. Too much of a stretch. From the original series to tmp it was 9 years. From tmp to twok it was about 4 years. From space seed to twok its 15 years. Easy as pumpkin pie.

So the Enterprise was to be retired only 4 years after an 18 month refit? Starfleet really needs to work on its resources management skills.

The dates given are the dates given. That's the canon and continuity. The ages of the actors or the sets don't really matter.

In Voyager, it is established that the five year mission ended in 2270. Per the Trek Chronology from the 90s, TMP takes place in 2272 and TWOK in 2285. Take the last two points as you will, of course. But if you are to believe that the end of the five year mission ended and Kirk was promoted (which makes sense), then the timeline works out.
