College Football 2024

Lousy weekend for football. Georgia Tech lost, Auburn lost, and Georgia and Alabama won. :(

I was at the Auburn/Cal game, and it was messy. Five turnovers, and it could have been much worse. It was not a good sign when the second play was fumbled for a touchdown, but was thankfully called back. There was another (can't remember, 3rd quarter?) where Thorne threw the ball downfield, and ended up a good 10 yards from any Auburn player, but it was about 2 feet from being another interception. (Also, it's still weird that this was technically an SEC/ACC game!)

As for the rankings, I understand Tech dropping off, but getting no votes whatsoever? Also, I understand they won, but with as much trouble as they had in their games, HOW did Alabama and Penn State retain their place in the polls? Did the voters just look at the final score and not what happened in the games?

Bonus pic from pregame! My daughter's in that formation somewhere.

BJ are you a long time Barner or did your daughter make you a fan? Just curious, btw. My mom’s first cousin was a professor there for years. She retired a US Army General (one of the first women ever) and taught there for a long time. I don’t think Auburn’s going to be an easy fix. Too much happened between Gus and Harsin and you know Freeze is going to have to be careful for a while with his prior ncaa woes.

That said, Alabama won but they lost the first three quarters. Golesh is our former OC and has given them trouble 3 years in a row (one win with Tennessee and 2 close losses with USF vs Bama). Neither Saban nor Deboer has been able to handle HCs and OCs that can scheme away talent advantages. Pruitt and Smart were the DCs that could and they are both gone. Pruitt is unhireable for a while. Freeze for all his faults can call an offense and I don’t think Auburn will stay in the gutter but y’all need to find another DL coach like Garner (so happy he is back at UT).

My wife's an Auburn alum, so it's been my secondary fandom for 30 years now! We met when I was in the GT Band and she was in the Auburn Band. :D
That’s awesome. The extra UGA hate is a bonus lol. I had no idea what UGA fans were going to turn into. Never have I encountered a fanbase made more insecure by winning. It’s kinda the opposite effect it had on BAMA fans which despite being our main rival are far more bearable than a lot of UGAs fanbase under Smart. Sad thing is I don’t think we’re ready to cut them back down to size just yet.

"Coach Prime" really should have looked at his O-Line instead of just focusing on his son and other skill positions. I switched away from the Tennesee game because it was so lopsided and I was curious to see Nebraska's shiny new QB, but what really stuck out was just how poor Colorado's O-line is.

And I'm sorry @B.J. but I was tickled to see Auburn go down to Cal of all people. Hail Discordia!

Sad for Georgia Tech though, but it'll be interesting to see if Syracuse can keep it up.

Read a report this morning that the Pac 12 is trying to rebuild my bringing in teams like San Diego St., Fresno St., Boise St, and Colorado St. Maybe this might entice Stanford and Cal to come back. It will save on travel at least.

Pac still needs two more teams to get to the minimum required 8. Mountain West still has 9 left, so they can be slightly choosy. All four of the Dakota schools and the Montanas are well positioned if any of them and the MWC decide to go that way. I wonder if UNLV, Nevada and Utah St, might still be in play for the Pac. Texas-San Antonio and South Florida might also be in play.

@jenji120

What the hell is with UT's schedule this year? Why is the Florida game in October and not the third game of the year? Why is Oklahoma - OKLAHOMA - the first conference game?

I was gonna check out UT vs Florida to laugh at the Gators only to find a Kent State slaughter?

Florida and Alabama back-to-back is a joke.

Oklahoma is where it is because we were actually scheduled to play them this year as an OOC game but then they joined the conference. That's also the reason why our cupcakes are softer than normal -- we had to scramble to switch things around once OU became a conference game. Florida and Georgia both have been pushed to the end of the schedule. Florida, we've always wanted to play later (second week in September was always a pain) and I think the conference obliged that. Why they put it right before BAMA, I have no idea. I suspect we didn't complain since Florida has been so terrible AND because this won't be a permanent schedule.

Georgia at the end of the year (basically in the old Kentucky slot) is likely the result of us getting good again AND fan/broadcaster complaints that the conference didn't have many end of the year marquee games. Other than the Florida-BAMA positioning, our schedule is one of the easiest we've had in decades so I can't complain too much.

Tennessee has outscored our last 4 opponents 234-13. Two of those teams (Iowa *bowl game* and NC State) were ranked. IDK how the rest of the year goes but that's an insane stat. Apparently defense and offense are touching records we haven't seen since 1916 and the 1930s. We're in the top 5 for offensive output AND defense. That said, Saturday against OU is going to tell us how real this team is.

Yeah NC State is a valuable stat but the Mocs and Kent State don't tell us much.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess it makes sense but I hate it. :p I like Florida being so early in the year and I hope that comes back, because it serves as a good test of just where the program is at early on. Likewise, Kentucky should always be the last game of the year. :p

Stupid conference realignment and growth and stupidly messing with things that actually matter!

Seems like Georgia Tech got our mad out on VMI. (WTF is a keydet anyway? On their own website, even they say they don't know!)

uga barely escaped Kentucky, dropping them from the top spot. I really wish Kentucky could have pulled it out, but at least some damage was done.

The implosion of FSU this year after complaining about the ACC is just too funny! 0-3 now, all to unranked teams!

And I was at a very soggy Auburn game. Auburn was struggling at the beginning, but eventually pulled away. The freshman quarterback, Hank Brown, was doing pretty good, especially considering the weather conditions. Certainly a lot better than Thorne was doing last week!

Bonus eagle flight pic. Indy flew right over my head! I'm honestly shocked that I got such a good pic with my old phone!

So, apparently 0-3 FSU is favored by 2 points over 3-0 Cal. Over in the CFB reddit thread, the Cal and FSU people are arguing about who's worse, and both sides say it's their own team!

I heard on my local sports station here in Seattle this morning that Tennessee has announced that they're raising the price of admission to their home games in order to pay for the coaches salary. Well, at least they're honest about it.
