College Football 2024

That disadvantages good conferences. If Vanderbilt is better than Liberty Vanderbilt should get the spot despite being at the bottom of their conference.

There's no way to know who's better until they're on the field - and even then Vandy might get complacent and Liberty might get lucky.

I don't care about who's "better" just because they're in the SEC, I want to see who's going to win - even if it has to be Jerry Fallwell U.

(I'll note here that if we had promotion and relegation between conferences like soccer, that would help.)

If the SEC and Big Ten want six teams each in the playoff, then they need to leave the NCAA entirely.
The best teams should play. If the BIG and SEC left cfb would collapse. Everyone knows that. The NCAA doesn’t control football’s championship the way it does other sports and never has. All leaving would do is decimate athletics across the board not just football. Baseball is already regional + California. The NCAA would simply be the host of March Madness which itself would be diminished because so many schools rely on paydays from the current system. That’s a nightmare scenario.

Vanderbilt just beat Virginia Tech. Who has Liberty beaten?

The SEC and Big Ten are trying to box out lesser schools, nothing more, nothing less. It isn’t good for the game.

I disagree. The Sec isn’t making this argument. I don’t know about the B1G. The SEC will push for 4 and likely get it this year but if they’re 4 of the best teams in the country that’s only right. Baseball was all SEC/ACC. The only reason people don’t argue over that is because the field starts so much larger and gets beaten down. Football is never gonna go to 64 teams.

From my perspective, the SEC and Big Ten should only be allowed three each. If you’re finishing fourth or worse, you going to most likely get your ass kicked by the big boys every bit as much as a Liberty.

So, a 7-5 Vanderbilt should get in before an undefeated Liberty?
What I’d do is run it through a formula much like basketball and if Vandys good wins and good losses came out on top that is exactly who I’d put in. I can go undefeated at a judo tournament for toddlers. Level of competition matters and if Liberty can’t find one or two opponents they can keep their corrupt asses home.

Vanderbilt and others are whipping boys for money and prestige, not sure there is anything more corrupt than that. :p

The problem right now is that there are about 5 teams in the SEC that I don’t think anyone outside can beat. This is due to coaching and recruiting disparities. The only challenger is tOSU and Ryan Day holds OSU back. If you want to truly fix football it starts in recruiting.

If they want to fix anything, then money can’t come first. We all know how unlikely that is.

more corrupt than Jerry Falwell, Ken Starr and a coach who bought prostitutes for recruits (though we know he lied and said they were for him)?

I know Freeze is at Auburn now but this is what Liberty owes it’s success to.

That is a deep dive that other folks are far more knowledgeable about than I am. Vanderbilt stays in a conference that they simply will never be more than a bottom feeder in, because of money and prestige.

I actually think open money has made things cleaner. I was heavily opposed to NIL and still don’t like the way things are done but an open system is easier to deal with.

It went off the rails a long time ago, when schools started competing for coaches and pushed the salaries into the tens of millions of dollars.

Liberty was founded by Falwell who made that program a prestige point for the Christian Right. Ken Starr as AD hired Hugh Freeze after he was busted buying escorts on Ole Miss’ dime. Liberty symbolizes everything wrong in academia and sport. Freeze at Ole Miss had a fake ass preacher persona and was one of the slimiest coaches to ever grace a sideline. He was blacklisted by the SEC for years. Auburn collapsed enough to hire him.

Virginia Tech went 7-6 last year, the days of Beamerball are sadly long gone. Liberty didn't beat anybody notable but the second-place team in C-USA took down Auburn (coached, amusingly enough, by Hugh Freeze). Then Liberty got smacked in the face, but they won Conference-USA so in a 12-team system they earned the chance to be punched in the face.

Liberty and Fallwell and Ken Starr are jackasses. But like you noted, Hugh Freeze was gone when they went undefeated. Meanwhile Alabama shut down Alabama-Birmingham's program for a couple years because they were seen as a threat and Ohio State turned a blind eye to Urban Meyer's shenanigans until it leaked. And let's not pretend that there weren't young women being 'encouraged' to spend some with UT recruits over the years - which doesn't make it okay, obviously.

And in a 12-team playoff, Heupel's undefeated UCF would have deserved a shot too.

Kiffin had one year of hostesses and we got hammered. That program wasn’t used like that before or after. Kiffin was also fucking coeds and wrecking a university car while drunk. We have 127 other years when Kiffin wasn’t there.

Liberty operates by taking players who are no longer welcome elsewhere. They have some clean guys but they are built on corruption and guys who got into serious trouble. Other programs in their own conference aren’t willing to do this which has led to their success. They are Auburn at Auburn’s worst moments with religious fanaticism thrown in. Fuck them.
