Hockey Talk - 2007-2008 Season

Brutal second period last night - total collapse and playing for ten minutes a game probably aren't the way to go about ensuring a play-off drive, O Canucks.

Yup, that was pretty damn terrible. Usually I scoff at people who leave the arena before the game is done, but I actually found myself flipping over to a Stargate rerun by the third period. Not even a particularly good one, either. A brainwashed slave labor plot, really? Oh well. Sure beat the cheap beer/cheap pizza-fueled depression earlier on.

Nuck go up 2-0 on Calgary and then get fucking dominated for the last 40 minutes of the game and lose 3-2. It was absolutely brutal. The only thing worse than the way they played is this hangover.

so I guess the hair of the dog isn't treating you well tonight, then?
Nope.....man that stung.

Jeeez, so not only do we lose serious ground in the playoff race in two nights by showing a lack of heart and effort, we lose Brendan Morrison for the rest of the year (ACL) and Luongo is off to Florida to be with his wife while she gives birth to their first child. I have no problem with Luongo's decision, family should always come first, but I have to wonder how this team will look without him in net against the Wild on Friday. Why we didn't add more scoring depth at the trade deadline is still beyond me, and if Nonis doesn't make some MAJOR moves in the offseason, Luongo won't renew and he'll be out of here and we'll be the Columbus Blue Jackets. Except even they have a great goalie and more prospects than we do.

Even if we make the playoffs, I've seen nothing from this team (apart from Luongo) that indicates that we are a Stanley Cup contender. So the best we can hope for at this point is maybe advancing to the second round, and even that's a stretch. Man I love this team but they sure do make it hard sometimes....

Sharks have two very big games back to back. Tonight against the Stars and then the rematch tomorrow in Anahiem. Looking forward to both and to see if they can wrap up the Pacific Devision this week.

Big win for San Jose tonight. Nabokov saved the game at the end with making sure the puck didn't cross the line. Now it's on to Anahiem to try to wrap up the Pacific.

The Leaf fans around here still think their team has a chance at a playoff spot.

It'd be cute if it wasn't so pathetic. ;)

Looking at the standings for the Eastern conference, I'm kind of hoping the Sens will drop two spots and everyone else will stay where they are - that way we get the Battle of Pennsylvania, and the Battle of New York/New Jersey, and Boston playing Montreal - three nice geographic pairings, if not necessarily rivalries.

Ottawa and Carolina are nowhere near each other, but they have some history together and they're exciting to watch. And I think the Sens can beat Carolina.

The Leafs are mathematically eliminated. 3rd season in a row, no playoffs. Yet, I bet the team posts some great profit this year, and hopefully that in turn doesn't encourage them to go and make their team better.

Softens the blow of how horrible my Nucks are playing....

Funny, I thought we were over worrying about making the playoffs. Watching the Canucks over the last month or so has been a little too rollercoaster for my liking, kind of thing which could make alcoholics out of most hockey fans.

The great thing about the Ducks is their secret move where the five players make a V formation and pass the puck quickly between the others confusing the other team, scoring a goal, winning the game and getting coach Bombay to find salvation in the sport that he loved since he was young.

But what an awesome game for the Habs! They score a goal in the final minutes and tie it up in the final seconds of the game and then go on to win and are now back in first place! Good times.

SHARKS WIN THE PACIFIC!!!!

Great win from the Sharks tonight and to get it done in their rival arena down south was just so sweet. They can still catch detroit, but now they are no worse than 2ed in the playoffs. Damn this team has been on a role since the deadline.

Must be nice, winning things. *glug glug glug*

The only thing worse than living in a hockey city when the team isn't doing well is listening to sports radio at the same time. Some of these callers, man, they'd be out there with torches if it weren't for the fear of police intervention. A week ago everything was rosy, now they're venting like we're livin' in Toronto or something. I've met cats who are less fickle than Canucks fans.

Ottawa's the same way.

It doesn't help that our team is really streaky.

You can't judge a city by the goofballs that call in to talk radio. You really only get a person who knows what they're talking about once every 15 callers, where ever you go.

Exactly. If we did that, San Francisco would be in shambles. :guffaw:

That's the funny thing about hockey: the fans are either radical beyond belief, or totally apathetic.

I grew up in norther Minnesota so I know the "Hockey is life!" mantra as well as anyone. People get irate over the littlest things--even in peewee hockey. This attitude is only augmented at the professional level. When things aren't going well, it's like the end of the world. It's like, as you say, listening to sports-talk radio is something akin to reading the obituaries. Even a few weeks ago when the Wild were in that bad slump everyone viciously showed their fangs and had more or less had called for Death. A month later, the team is back on top and everyones all "Ooh-raw! OOh-Raw!" again.

On the other hand, you have these other cities were hockey became the en vogue sport of the 90s where people see it at its entertainment level only and approach the team with a "Whatever.." mentality. They hardly understand the basic rules of the game, barely know the players, and just like to watch the fights.

It's not like other baseball, football, or basketball where every real fan is a hardcore fan.

BTW: I really dig your avatar. :techman:

Well, my Preds are making this week so nerve wrecking going down to the last minute. I hope that they win their last three games to make it to the playoffs. What makes it even more nerve wrecking is that I am getting married on Saturday so I will be wondering how the Predators are doing on Friday when I should be concentrating on the rehearsal dinner. Well, I will know in four days I guess.

I'd like to wish the Preds well, but it's a hard sell considering how a resurgent Nashville squad can only really come at the expense of my Canucks.

Colorado @ Vancouver tonight. Surely they can win at least one timely game against the Avs, right? I can almost see one potential upside to the proposed 84-game schedule as the finish line approaches.

High five! I'm never sure if anyone gets the reference or not.
