Yeah, it's nonsense because that story doesn't have an actual ending and I imagine they don't actually have anything fleshed out to explain why it had to be Discovery, why it had to be 1000 years in advance, and why Craft was important.I was 100% opposed to tying Calypso in to the end of the series, but this, unfortunately, was the worst possible way to do it.
It's basically the Trek equivalent of "a wizard did it." Kovich says it has to happen, and so it does. Didn't need to be said, IMHO. And Kovich knowing Craft by name just makes it worse, as it implies their fleeting encounter has to happen because...I dunno. Certainly the two of them together don't amount to much.
