It was new. This is the biggest evolutionary leap in phaser technology we've seen in the franchise.

Well it's a thousand years from TOS so yeah they needed to show advancement but honestly it isn't that impressive for a thousand years later. The discovery crew seems to have easily learned the tech and the culture. I would rather they had gone 200 years in the future at most or even in Picards era. I thought the transporter badges were self transporters that could work on their own but with the second ep it seems that they need to be connected to the ship sort of like an iwatch needs to be connected to an iPhone.

It’s so nice to have the show back. I’m glad that they are following up on The Chase. I had no idea that this season was going to connect to another Star Trek series episode so I was pleasantly surprised by this.
I had great joy in watching these two episodes. Trek can be a bit more than entertainment, but that factor is still what it needs to keep it popular.

Hm there's an episode up for the ready room on Facebook, but not the P+ youtube channel (unless it's region locked)

I can see previous Ready Room videos on there.

This is the first time we've seen the 32nd Century Starfleet Phaser Rifle. They only used the Hand Phasers last season.

Also I think the phasers are created as needed by a wrist mounted replicator. I thought initially the phasers were on the wrist and then just telescoped out, but in the scene were Burnham is trying to deactivate the drones, she drops her phaser into one of the statues eye sockets and then just creates another one using her wrist device. I also liked the scene where Tilly asks for a coffee and one just 3D prints on her bedside table.
The phaser rifle was always stupid. It does nothing a phaser doesn't.

Loved Tilly's coffee. That tech was when you think about it already available in the 24th century but the BermanTrek writers could never understand the possibilities of their own technology.

I too am happy for the follow up…but beware, there are many on TBBS who think any reference to prior trek is insular navel gazing that won’t grow a new audience and is therefore horrible.

Of all the advancements in technology, having coffee instantly manifest wherever you are must rate as one of the most significant. Forget K Cups!

Now I'm going to spend the rest of my week requesting "Computer? Coffee!" and waiting for a mug to show up.

Exactly. It had everything to do with saving money, not honoring anything. DS9 was a gimmick episode, honoring an anniversary. They did not speak of it ever again.
Absolutely correct.

Now sure They're were a few episodes that did try and recreate the original look. But those were designed for singular episodes.

If when TNG ended they decide that they were instead going to do a Discovery style show there is literally no chance they wouldn't have updated the visual look.

This is especially true the further you get away from your original source material. Hell TNG didn't even do a slavish recreation of Encounter at Farpoint for All Good Things. They dd some nods, but thats about it.

Those were stunt episodes and there was still quite a few living TOS fans during that time. I was just very young kid when TOS came out and I am 60 now. Since the average age of the TOS audience member was over 35, that means by the time Streaming Trek came out a good chunk of that audience have died.

And just to be absolutely clear for those that think SNW does a solid job of honoring TOS but still updating it, you seem to forget that color scheme, that design look isn't appropriate for the time SNW is set. It should be grabbed, and highly muted styles.

It's matching an inappropriate look that is not based on the period it is in. Its using post Pilot episode of TOS, not the material from the Menagerie as a starting off point.

And I am quite sure the majority of the general audience is very happy with that choice, even if it is utterly wrong.

I thought it was a solid 8, although the sand motorcycle sequence could've been halved and still been too long, and those several Burnham catch phrases and quips were not quite up to classic snuff. As for the names of the baddies, Moll was sure on the nose as a descriptor, and probably not her real name. The gruff new character was too cookie cutter for me, but maybe there will be some fleshing out over this season. Tilly's quips were a lot better than Burnham's in delivery... wonder if that guy flirting with her will be a recurring character on Starfleet Academy. Overall a bit overproduced IMO but thoroughly enjoyable!

Would you say that when comparing a regular hand gun to a rifle? Probably not! I'd guess the same sort of advantages, improved power, accuracy, and range.
Phasers don't have recoil. So a rifle version really wouldn't change much accuracy wise.
