Good! So, I'm getting a mix of episodes I like, and some that are just ok, while not rearranging my damn schedule to accommodate 26 episodes?

Psst. They have this streaming thing where you watch them when it works for you . . . :)

I don't think the episode quality is that much higher overall TBH. Okay, maybe we don't get truly terrible episodes much, but most modern Trek seasons tend to be a mix of good and mid. And most seasons of DIS and PIC had filler episodes anyway.

Not to mention with the serialized shows when they flub the total arc/ending, it makes even the good episodes less enjoyable. Like I really liked If Memory Serves when it came out, but the Control/Red Angel arc was so awful overall for Season 2.
Count me as one who misses the 26 episode seasons and for all the reasons you list.

DS9, my personal favorite, mastered the art of using those episodes effectively. They used a handful for the larger arc. And then a bunch for experimentation and focusing on different characters. I loved that mix.

The main thing the lower episode count gets you are better SFx. They can spend more dollars per episode. I don't tend to watch for the SFx and prefer the stories, so that's not such a plus for me.

And, agreed, even with the lower episode count, there still is filler!

These aren't young adults and a young adult novel. I dint need to hear about people's feelings every episode especially crying. We watch this stuff to get away from the real world.
I watch it to engage with a potential future where people can be their best selves, where decency matters, where kindness and empathy are not viewed as weakness. The same reason I watched when I was 11 only now it's turned up to 11. :)

I've actually been writing a novel for the past two years which involves a lot of "people talking about their feelings."

Thing is, it happens when appropriate. And some characters are repressed and can't talk about their feelings, while others are pretty shallow, just in for drinking and having a good time.

I think having a wide range of characters like this is important, because it means you can mix up dynamics from scene to scene depending on who's involved.

We watched this last night. Wow, that was *fun*!
  • Fred was fun. Too bad he died.
  • L'ak and Moll are intriguing. What do they think they're after? I like how they mirror how Book & Michael were.
  • So lovely to see Culber checking in on how Book is doing.
  • Tilly obviously can't flirt. It was kind of adorable.
  • Book got sent off by the Fed at the end of last season, so I found his and Michael's awkwardness with each other realistic. They did a breakup without actually saying it and now have to deal with it.
  • Staments being pissed they aren't going forward with the spore drive was realistic too. Now he's concerned he won't have a legacy. I found that a nice addition to his character.
  • Vance is The Awesome. He obviously didn't like being left in the dark either.
  • Adira saying that she both likes and doesn't like being without Grey was a lovely and (again) realistic scene.
  • My hubby was *thrilled* they're following up on The Chase! He felt that was too important to leave unmentioned ever again. I said the writers obviously agreed. :D
  • I liked the deflectors-stop-an-avalanche and all the back and forth between Michael and Rayner beforehand.
  • Rayner is a terrific new addition.
Overall, I enjoyed the ep and think this season could be a fun ride.

  • Phaser pistol telescopes into high power rifle. Simply genius.
Yeah, that’s a neat concept! Did we see that before or was that a new thing?

I think it's a new thing. And I like it! Tricorders got smaller--phasers got longer! It's that programmable matter stuff! It's better than Play Doh!

This is the first time we've seen the 32nd Century Starfleet Phaser Rifle. They only used the Hand Phasers last season.

Also I think the phasers are created as needed by a wrist mounted replicator. I thought initially the phasers were on the wrist and then just telescoped out, but in the scene were Burnham is trying to deactivate the drones, she drops her phaser into one of the statues eye sockets and then just creates another one using her wrist device. I also liked the scene where Tilly asks for a coffee and one just 3D prints on her bedside table.

It was new. This is the biggest evolutionary leap in phaser technology we've seen in the franchise.
