Spoilers Variety about the future of Star Trek

I have often found the other side of any discussion of returning characters to be quite toxic as well. The terms "memberberry" and "fanwank" are dismissive and rude.
Oh, I quite like the term fanwank, but I usually use it in the context of how I quite like the fanwank.

Totally with you on memberberries though.

I used to like it myself. But I've found it used way too much in Doctor Who discussion, so instead of being fun and inclusive it's largely turned dismissive and mean.

Which is how most Legacy talk goes. "You don't like the idea? Tough :censored:. "

After 30 years in the fandom you'd think I'd get use to it.

Well, I'm glad I haven't been in/seen much discussion about it since Picard ended. This is the only place I talk about Star Trek though, so maybe that's why? Though I also don't peruse the board much in the off-season.

Is that when they ditched the white turtleneck or when they replaced it with a white T-Shirt?

Yep.

if the film sticks with what's been established, we'll at least still have the belts. The belts complete the look more than anything.

I get Kingsmen vibes from his character. Not really interested in seeing him as a lead for a series. He’d do better in a Jason Bourne like series.

Probably why I like the character.

Kingsman and Bourne is more my style.

To be fair, all the Nu Trek shows have been relying too heavily on 'callbacks' lately.

I believe it's because they've realized these streaming shows are only playing to the existing aging fanbase.

Starfleet Academy seems to be their last ditch attempt to try and build a new audience. It won't work with a YA series.

Star Trek needs a fresh canvas for a new audience. This upcoming 'origins' film is probably their best bet for a clean slate.

Everything in film and TV has. Not just Trek.

You don't need a clean slate. You just need a good show, a la TNG.

I guess it depends on what ones values in a series. I think there is more than enough room in Trek's vast repository of storytelling for multiple ideas. Were I push back is that "this is the only way to do Trek."

Trek's history demonstrates that's not the case at all.

I think at this point, a clean slate is the best way to build a new, younger fanbase from a business POV.

It doesn't have to be a reboot, but a logical entry point for new audiences that doesn't require having existing knowledge of the Trekverse.

We are at moment where the Star Wars movies have yeeted themselves into development hell, so there's space for this new Star Trek film franchise potentially. If done right.

I trust your application is in to Paramount?

You need a “reboot” continuation or prequel like TNG was for the original. The problem is that you have about 20 years of Trek. It’s challenging to come up with fresh stories. This is one of the problems with Enterprise that didn’t really get good until its last season.

The P+ stuff has mostly been nostalgia driven.

I’m not sure what to do with new Trek.

The biggest mistake a lot of studios make is assuming their audience is dumb.
The first Trek I ever saw was Star Trek 4. Half of it. On TV when I was channel surfing.
When I saw Wrath of Khan a few weeks later (my mom rented all 6 movies for me when I got sick), I was convinced Spock was going to burst out of that coffin and say "Hey, I'm not dead!" Hey, I was 9.
Point is, if I could get into it, anyone can. A good story, that's all you really need.
