They don't do theatrical releases for their other exclusive movies, not even a limited run. They're not going to just because it's Star Trek. Besides, when they did theatrical screenings of TNG two-parters to sync up with Blu-ray releases, that didn't exactly do wonders. Likely why they gave up on those.
Probably a poor ROI.

I think releasing a 20 year old episode of TNG is quite different that releasing new content , with modern t v production in an aspect ratio already primed for the big screen with a Oscar winner involved . The metric here is not how well it does in comparison to other Trek full features or old episodes of Trek released to theatres. It should be in comparison to other new/original to consumer streaming movies that have had theatrical runs. At the end of the day, Paramount will probably agree with you. I just think it wouldn't be bad idea since the production costs are already in the can and you have the marquee of an Academy award winner involved as the lead. Something you can't say for any other show or movie in Star Trek entire history.

They're not going to spend more than needed.

Well you can over spend or not spend enough in promotion alone. Fine line between spending and investing. I'm no Theatres financial expert , does it really cost that much to contract content/distribute to the theatres? Because they have already spent the money on its production already.

Young Rachel Garrett is in the movie. When does this movie take place?? Obviously not circa SNW unless Rachel Garrett is pushing 100 in Yesterday's Enterprise
If Garrett commanded the C in 2344 it would be prior to that. OG actress was about 45 in "Yesterday's Enterprise". So young Garrett might be in her twenties placing the timeframe in the 2320s.

Likely as not.

Pain in the ass.

As to why they did a film as opposed to a Section 31 series:
https://variety.com/2024/tv/feature...-academy-section-31-michelle-yeoh-1235952301/
...I’m on the set of the “Star Trek” TV movie “Section 31,” seated in an opulent nightclub with a view of a brilliant, swirling nebula, watching Yeoh rehearse with director Olatunde Osunsanmi and her castmates. Originally, the project was announced as a TV series centered on Philippa Georgiou, the semi-reformed tyrant Yeoh originated on “Discovery.” But between COVID delays and the phenomenon of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” there wasn’t room in the veteran actress’s schedule to fit a season of television. Yeoh was undaunted.

“We’d never let go of her,” she says of her character. “I was just blown away by all the different things I could do with her. Honestly, it was like, ‘Let’s just get it done, because I believe in this.’”...

As much as I'm looking forward to S31, I normally don't like to talk about it here. But I will stop in to say this: I'm glad S31 is taking place roughly during the period I wanted Early-Discovery to take place in: The Lost Era! Something we've seen very, very little of.

On top of that, Captain Garrett was one of my favorite characters in "Yesterday's Enterprise".

I'm not throwing out the possibility that Georgiou goes time-skipping, but yeah, decent chance it's in the Lost Era entirely.

Keeping in mind this was originally meant to be a series, with this movie presumably being the pilot originally, that could have meant we could have had a series, or at least an entire season in the Lost Era.

This is one missed opportunity that saddens me to have missed out on.
