New Classic Who Blu-Ray Sets (2021 edition)

Has it ever been discussed if NuWho could ever receive a treatment akin to The Collection? If not we should be gathering material for fan covers to match the sets, lol.
The team have said they’d love to have a crack at the new series, but there are no plans yet.

Given Christopher Eccleston’s recent comments, plus the Barrowman/Noel Clarke issues, a Series 1 release would be quite tricky to do with any honesty. I think if it does happen, it’ll have to wait until RTD has retired and can speak with a bit more reflection.

The DVD version is only partial colour and it's a bit of a mess - the colour recovery they used successfully on The Mind of Evil and Planet of the Daleks wasn't as effective here as it turned out the blue signal had been filtered out when the film recording was made. The DVD budget couldn't stretch far enough to fix it so they made it an optional bonus with the B&W episode as the default.

Personally I think it's perfectly watchable and I'm sure it'll look perfect when they get to the Blu-ray. They've just colourised The Daleks, and the recovered colour episodes on the Season 8 set looked amazing!

Pertwee's my favourite classic era, so I'm really looking forward to his last two sets. :D

I must've been thinking of Mind of Evil and Planet of the Daleks. I forgot that Invasion of Dinosaurs wasn't quite as good and that it was a separate feature on the disc. I thought it was good. Probably why I forgot!

I love Pertwee's era as well!

The seasons that can be released without requiring reconstructions or recreations are Season 7 (Pertwee), Season 11 (Pertwee), Season 13 (T. Baker), Season 15 (T. Baker), Season 16 (T. Baker), Season 21 (Davison), and Season 25 (McCoy).
Ambassadors of Death (s7) requires fairly extensive work if they want a decent color version on the disc. If that's not a priority, then you're correct.

But I suspect they're holding it back to let the technology improve and prices come down.

Given that Spearhead is already on bluray, and most of the others would need a lot of work, I doubt that season 7 is near the top of the list.

The problem is that we're nearing the end of unreleased seasons that don't need a lot of work in one way or another.

Season 1 - Rights issues for AUC, recons for Marco Polo and The Reign of Terror 4 & 5
Season 3 - Recons for Mission, Myth Makers, DMP, The Massacre, and The Savages
Season 4 - Most stories recently released as standalone animations
Season 5 - Fairly straightforward if they can use the BritBox recon of The Wheel in Space
Season 6 - Recons for The Invasion 1 & 4 and The Space Pirates
Season 7 - Further color restoration for 3/4 stories
Season 11 - New color restoration for Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1
Season 13
Season 15
Season 16
Season 21
Season 25
The Wilderness Years (TV Movie and probably other things from the interim years)

That's six sets without major issues and seven sets with "issues" of one sort or another. I would hazard a guess that they'll do one of each per year for the rest of the range (unless they manage to get back to 3 sets a year, which would be nice, in which case I'd guess they'll alternate more and less difficult seasons).

That being said, I'd guess that Seasons 1 (because of the AUC rights) and Season 4 (because of the number of individual releases, including The Smugglers, which is rumored to be the next animation) will be towards the end of the range.

^ As has been discussed in this thread, there are still 2-3 years worth of "easy" Blu Ray season sets available. Hopefully, within that time, they'll do several more animations that complete several seasons, thus extending the runway.

And, we're not guaranteed an uninterrupted run too. There might well be a gap.

But I am hopeful that we'll eventually have a complete set of all classic Who on Blu Ray! That's probably at least 5 years from now though.

Yeah, they'll all come eventually.

My money for the next few sets will be another Tom, a Troughton, an eighties season and another Pertwee.

So maybe 15, 6, 25 and 11. That'll take us well into 2025 on current form.

I would put Jackie Hill in the same league but yes a step or so above the rest. Would love for RTD to follow up on the trailer. Leela back in the show would be incredible and Jameson is more than capable of it.

Looking forward to this, Season 15 includes two of my all-time favourite stories, Sunmakers and Image Of The Fendahl.

Lots of interesting extras as usual and good to see some new combinations on Behind The Sofa. Fielding and Sutton paired with Colin Baker should be fun

Here's Chris Chapman on the new Graham documentary: https://twitter.com/ChrisChapman81/status/1745451326472122533

"The Season 15 box set features the documentary I'm probably most proud of making: DARKNESS & LIGHT: THE LIFE OF GRAHAM WILLIAMS. It's been 2 years in the making, runs to 97mins and features over 20 interviewees including Graham's amazing family. I hope you like it."

Fantastic trailer. Fantastic artwork. Fantastic looking features, especially that Graham Williams documentary. Fantastic news all around.

Really looking forward to this.

Isn't there another documentary on Williams' life on DVD? On the Key to Time set?

Anyway. They better rush the season 16 set, while Tom is still with us.

If they haven't already recorded everything with him they'll need for Seasons 13 and 16 (at the same time as the interview shown in the trailer), I'll be very surprised indeed. The moment will have been prepared for, without a doubt.

Well, this is disappointing. Pete McTighe says that the Blu-ray mini-episode trailers are going to be "going to have to have a bit of a rest." He says they're a lot of work and there's also a bit of "where do we go from that?" following the epic Leela trailer. I do understand that, even if it feels like the answer is "bring in another writer." Especially since some of the potential reunions (Season 3, Season 6, and Season 25 in particular) have been covered by Tales of the TARDIS and The Power of the Doctor.

It's probably not a cast availability issue as it is the reasons he gave in the article - many of the remaining stories have at least one cast member who'd be physically able and/or presumably willing to shoot a trailer. (Oddly, the availability is there for the early seasons and later seasons - it's the Pertwee and Tom Baker seasons that don't have the cast members able to do it, assuming Tom can't.)

I'm sure that the usual suspects will blame RTD and/or Disney for this even though there's no evidence of that.

He also says: "We've kind of got half of one [film] in the can that we did 18 months ago, and there's more coming up."

So there's at least two more in the works.

All he's doing is managing expectations by saying is that they are unlikely to do more epic mini-films like Leela, or the Tegan/Mara one.

We can all work that out. I think it probably is cast availability to some extent - like you say, if we presume Tom will not take an active role, there are very few regular cast members still around from the remaining seventies seasons - it really is just John Levene and John Leeson, and they may not even be able to use the K9 character.

So I'd hazard a guess that the films in the works may be for eighties seasons (21 and 25), or possibly Frazer Hines/Padders for Season 6. Although Tales of the Tardis did steal the thunder there slightly.

It doesn't mean the trailers won't be as good. They just may be more in line with the fun earlier ones like Tegan's Concorde safety video for Season 19, or Louise's Voc Robot for Season 14.

Eh, John Levene could do some Unit stuff, and can always go out to guest characters.
