New Classic Who Blu-Ray Sets (2021 edition)

I like to consider these two seasons, because they're so short and because they're so interconnected via Ace's arc (basically the first proper companion arc spanning a series of stories), I like to brand them and consider them as one season, really.

I'm super excited for Season 25, as it's one of my favorites, but October feels like such a long ways away! And it also looks like we're only going to get two sets per year now, which is unfortunate.

There's so much to look forward to here, especially the special editions. I think this means we've got extended and/or special editions of every story from Revelation of the Daleks through The Curse of Fenric.

It's interesting how the McCoy years were so maligned at the time, but are now some of the most-loved series and get some of the best blu-ray releases.

I enjoyed the McCoy run from the start, with his Doctor tied (with Davison's) as my 2nd favorite interpretation and storylines overall.

This is not Doctor Who but likely of interest to many DW fans. They're releasing Blake's 7 on Blu-ray! Looks like they're giving it the full DW Blu-ray treatment with remastered video, updated SFx, new interviews, and so on.

Season 1 is available for preorder now. 6 Discs. Available November 11.

Um... the Hartnell Season 2/Doctor Who the Collection Season 2 Blu Ray set released in December 2022 in the UK, and March 2023 in the US. I own it and am literally looking at it right now (I'm in the US).

Oh, geez. Is this a reissue or something? The listing says it hasn't been released yet.

I had gotten a previous Hartnell but forgetting which season it was assumed this one was a different one!

It looks like the UK originally got a "Limited Edition" release in December 2022, with a bunch of physical extras and fancy packaging while the US got a standard release in march 2023. That standard release is what is coming to the UK in December 2024. It seems weird for them to wait that long to release a normal edition of the set, but that seems to be what is happening.

This is the standard release. I'm looking forward to it as I've been collecting the standard releases (they're cheaper and take up less shelf space). I just wish they'd accelerate the SE releases as there's more than enough LEs out to ensure that people who collect the latter won't switch to the former.

Yeah the standard reissues are all the same content in a smaller box. They are released around two years after the initial limited packaging releases. The only difference is the physical package, and the standard set comes with a slimmed-down booklet that only lists the disc content and omits the mini essays about each story.

Worth noting that the US editions never got these booklets, and I don't think they even get the disc contents listed, so the UK standard editions are still better releases.

Thanks for the info! File this under, tell me you bought the special edition but haven't watched it yet, without saying that! I did get the SE when it came out, but never got around to it.

Just got excited seeing a new release!

Got my copy of the Blake's 7 set today, and it looks really nice! The artwork is great and it comes with a nice booklet in the style of the Who releases.

I've never actually seen the show, so looking forward to dipping into it when I've finished Season 25.

Season one is roughly average (with some great lines added by the script editor when scripts ran short). Later seasons have higher highs and lower lows.

It's exactly the same here, I'm wondering if the box and packaging will be better than the episodes!

Looks like another sensational set! It's a brilliant season and all the new edits and effects should be wonderful. It's interesting how the McCoy years were so maligned at the time, but are now some of the most-loved series and get some of the best blu-ray releases.

Yup. At the time, most of the derision came from the fact that the BBC was increasingly switching to videotape for outside recording (ditching 16mm film) - the result looked cheap. Back then it looked cheap compared to previous seasons. Nowadays anything made over 5 years ago looks cheap. Either way, it's all r-r-r-r-r-r-relative.

The other issue I recall was fandom moaning over how the show was all about the companion now, "Ace Who" and such. There's greater emphasis on the companion, and there's still only one companion (the 60s and 70s had it right with two), but the companion didn't overtake, Ace being a rebellious/antisocial teen gave her a breath of fresh air and individuality (show vs tell), and she was written for as intelligently as the Doctor was. Even if "Fenric"'s showing her mommy-at-her-age was obvious from three thousand miles away, the scene following more than made up for it.

Not sure on all the special edition edits, with alternate takes, were needed. Most were and all were edited in incredibly well, but a few scenes quickly remind why they weren't used in the first place (acting, pacing, tone, and/or the scene was such a dumb idea they removed it. )

I think it’s because they are (a) pretty tightly written, especially the last two seasons and (b) are very much the template for the modern series, that it makes them much more approachable to modern/younger fans. At the time they probably felt a little alien to the older fans, because they were much bigger on character development.

Partial template. The 1996 TVM with far greater use of metatextual and fourth wall jokes and slicker VFX make it as much an influence.

Truth is, the series has been repeating patterns set here for years since its return (apart from the romance arcs) so seeing some of those things here, when they were a bit fresher, is probably quite a draw.

True.
