Because of the price, I want to wait until there are more full 'eras' completed before I buy the US versions of these sets.
Judging by a post on the official twitter account the remastered versions of Series 1-4 are getting a UK release, without having to buy the 13 Series boxset. Edit. Details. https://www.doctorwho.tv/news-and-f...ries-1-4-blu-ray-of-doctor-who-is-coming-soon
Yep, just came here to post the story. Like I said before, I actually would prefer a complete thirteen-series UK box set (I know a US version was announced with everything in the new series so far, but I'd rather have the show playing at the correct speed). Though this article does specifically mention that this one includes the bonus features from earlier releases, something that ambiguous in the earlier announcement.
Honestly, you could hold a gun to my head and I still wouldn't be able to tell you if I was watching the "wrong speed" verson or not. It's one frame a second. What I can tell is that the remastered picture quality looks pretty good; well except for Series 1. That vaseline-on-the-lens look is there forever.
I got my Season 20 set yesterday and it's absolutely wonderful so far (except for the glue holding the disc trays onto the case not being strong enough and the trays coming out; this appears to be a common problem). Watched Arc of Infinity and The Five Doctors (the restored transmission version) and the latter looks especially good. It's amazing what they can do to a restoration when they have all the original film trims for a story. The color grading is...interesting at points, but the picture quality is superb. You can actually see the Yeti now! The studio portions also look quite nice. Wish I had a surround system that could take advantage of the Dolby Atmos soundtrack; I have heard good things about it (no pun intended). I watched the Behind the Sofa for The Five Doctors and it was better than Season 9's; either Davison is less caustic on his own stories or they've edited his comments down quite a bit (possibly both). The pairings all have good chemistry (Davison, Fielding, Sutton, & Strickson; McCoy & Colin Baker; Manning & Aldred). Everyone had good things to say about The Five Doctors. Funny, too. At one point Katy Manning noted that the figures from the time scoop are probably in someone's collection and worth "squillons" today! Next up: The amazing plethora of special features on these discs, then Snakedance.
Yeah, the Five Doctors film sequences look phenomenal. I watched the new 40th anniversary version and genuinely thought the Yeti was a new addition!
I have this set as well. Just watched Arc of Infinity. Haven't watched The Five Doctors yet. I'll finish the set off with that one! Great hearing these positive reviews about it though!
I really want it, but it’s too early to ask for it for birthday or Christmas from family, and by the time those roll around it will be sold out.so will be waiting for the standard edition.
^^this x1000 The color grading is weird; at first I thought it was just because they were in the Death Zone, but that's not always the cast... The actor chemistry is consistently sublime. Never understood why Davison hates his own stories. "Snakedance" is as close to a 10/10 as anything could get for me. It's even better than "Androzani" (e.g. that "90% of the Kroll squid story rewritten with a generic fourth Doctor and Sarah in mind" story). And that's even before the new CGI is mentioned, which is marvelous... A couple nitpicks are inevitable, but with every rewatch there's something new. Indeed, even the "six faces of delusion" mask has more going on than just the fact that the sixth is the wearer's own (which is a clever enough idea in of its own) but I then stopped and analyzed the different facial expressions. Never did that before... never mind who would typically wear such a headdres... The worldbuilding of the Sumaran culture, not to mention the Manussan culture that built around it (not quite Rome building atop Greek lore, but I digress) is pretty steeped... and you know who's actually watched the story by how they comment on "the outfit"... There's often a double meaning behind the metaphor that really shows Christopher Bailey being one of the most intelligent and intellectual writers for the show who'd ever written for it.
Someone contacted the BBC directly about the remastered S1-4 and got this reply. I've never been able to hear the alleged speed up (or is it slow down?) but it looks like they're in the correct format at last.
Can’t be worse than the previous grading — The Doctors costume had all its Red go orange. Same problem as Jurassic Park some years back.
Has there been any word on the next classic series Blu Ray set after Season 20? I just finished that one, loved it, and I'm ready for more!
The Beginning boxset is at number 19 on the official DVD chart. That's higher than the 31st place ranking it got when first released in 2006. Official DVD Chart | Official Charts Take that Coburn
With strong rumors of 'The Smugglers' being animated next after 'The Underwater Menace,' Season 4's got to be on the short list to release in the next couple years. Otherwise, I'm thinking either another Pertwee or Tom.
Might have been his plan all along, withhold streaming rights and increase his cut from DVD sales, then once that starts to wind down then suddenly go for the streaming cash........i mean he might have seen Disney partner Who and thought "payday". Lol
Someone upthread mentioned there's a lag of about 21 months between releasing a Blu-ray set in limited and standard packaging. If my maths are correct I think that season 17 is overdue for release as a standard set. There's only been one release so far this year - season 24.
