Picard film in development

Yup, and this is only a recent development in the history of the medium. A lot of assumptions are made when this is still working itself out. There are a wide variety of options, and the market will continue to shift until they are able to balance out based upon market demands.

It will adjust, I think. Everyone liked streaming as this too good to be true thing. And it is too good to be true. The market can't support a dozen streaming services. I'm not sure it can support three.
People don't want to go back to networks because they like the convenience of instant access and the pleasure of no commercials. But that's not a sustainable model.

Of course it will adjust. That is the nature of business.

The larger point is why is shade being thrown at Paramount for doing things other business were doing? Are they supposed to just sit back and make content and shrug at anything new? Hyperbole in part, but it seems like companies were screwed either way.

I don't blame Paramount for trying. But,now that we see this won't work, it's time to try something else. Clearly, streaming as the only place to watch new Star Trek isn't going to cut it.

It isn't working out the same way as Netflix as Netflix already got there and two, running a streaming platform is difficult than just producing and airing content.

Netflix is having problems (their streaming strategy is hemorrhaging money).

They've just cancelled over 100 shows.

Streaming and VOD aren't the future of television, as the studios are discovering. Disney, Time Warner, Paramount et. al. are learning this at a tremendous cost

The VCR started it all back in the 80's (you could record shows off the TV and fast-forward through commercials).

You could watch TV whenever you wanted. No more having to sit glued to the TV at a certain time.

Which is what they are doing. Constricting production, reducing costs, using Starfleet Academy to reuse assets from Discovery, etc.

Star Trek is literally doing what people say they need to do.

Well, that's interesting. Again, the market is going to have to adjust.

Somewhat apropos of the issues in this thread, William Shatner has chimed in with an opinion on his Twitter account over the past few days, both about a possible Stewart-centric Star Trek project as well as retconning that's being done to the franchise by Nu-Trek, and he makes it clear that he feels the powers that be want to "erase" his version of Kirk from their vision of Star Trek.
  • On Patrick Stewart possibly returning again for another project and the negative pushback from some: "I think that a new movie with Sir Patrick is wonderful news. And… 'Haters gonna Hate'"
  • On whether we'll ever see him as Captain Kirk again: "All you have to do is look at the Paramount+ graphics to answer that question."
  • On if he knows why TOS Kirk is not featured in Paramount+'s promotion of Star Trek: "It’s not the first time it’s been going on for years. It makes no difference to me that a group who think they are “enlightened” (or whatever they think they are) obviously feels threatened by the Kirk character. It’s a character from a 1960’s TV show- get over it."
  • On why he thinks the retcon will fail: "It doesn’t bother me in the least. A bunch of self righteous strangers thinking they are sending a message by erasing the past? Who is going to forget? It’s everywhere. It’s so indoctrinated that it will take many generations to be forgotten no matter what they do. Let it be."

I'll only touch on the part relevant to what's supposed to be the topic of the thread.

He's right: Haters are gonna hate.

That's so awesome to read coming from such a prominent figure in the franchise...

But what "retcon"? The re-casting of Kirk in SNW?

He's coming off as a self-righteous asshole. I love the character he helped create, but he hasn't been a prominent figure in the franchise for 20 years.
Yup. He did good work for the franchise but comes across as the very self-righteous people he's condemning.

Clearly Shatner didn't learn anything from all those years hanging with Leonard Nimoy. Now there was an example of grace and humility.

Correction: Shatner hasn't been relevant to the franchise for thirty years.

Yeah so I'm really confused what "retcon" @Citiprime
Because another actor playing a character would not be a "retcon" that happens all the time.
I'm only going by what the man wrote, but the implication from those comments is that he sees Nu-Trek (presumably Strange New Worlds and the iteration of Kirk they introduced) and the reasoning of "updating for modern audiences" that's been used for all of the "visual retcons" as well as the changes to the Gorn and Khan, as a way to overwrite TOS and his version of Kirk because the powers that be feel TOS is dated, or that Shatner's Kirk is problematic (i.e., hence the reason Shatner telling people "it's a character from a 1960s TV show - get over it").

Shatner already told an audience at San Diego Comic-Con two-years ago that he believed Gene Roddenberry would be "turning in his grave at some of this stuff" when he was asked about Nu-Trek.

When asked by a fan if there were any new Star Trek series he thought rivaled his own, Shatner replied, “none of them." ... “I got to know [creator] Gene Roddenberry in three years fairly well,” said Shatner, “he’d be turning in his grave at some of this stuff.”

I doubt Shatner has even watched much of the new stuff. He's saying what he thinks the audience wants to hear. As for Roddenberry he once stated he was excited to see what others could do with Star Trek. OTOH, he wasn't too thrilled with a lot of the Trek Shatner was involved in.

I highly doubt William Shatner gives a flying kick about changes to the Enterprise or the Gorn. He's come off as nothing but bitter towards Trek, ever since Nimoy appeared in '09.

When asked by a fan if there were any new Star Trek series he thought rivaled his own, Shatner replied, “none of them."

Pretty sure I recall him saying he hasn't seen any of the newer offerings.

“he’d be turning in his grave at some of this stuff.”

Only because he wasn't making any money from it.
