Spoilers What If...? season two discussion thread

These last couple episode were really good, this whole season has been off to a great start.
The Avengers 1988 were pretty cool, I would definitely be up for seeing more of them. Like you guys said before, this one really opens up some interesting ripples in the timeline as we get farther out.
Today's episode was a lot of fun, but it was probably the least alternate of any of the universes we've seen so far. What was it that was different in this one? There wasn't really anything that jumped out at me as not possible in the 616 timeline. Really all they'd have to do is cure Happy and unless there's something big I'm forgetting, it could easily squeeze in somewhere before Age of Ultron.
Happy going Die Hard and then becoming a Hulk was a lot of fun. It was nice to see Maria Hill again, especially after how she was killed off in Secret Invasion. I loved Tony and Steve playing mall Santa and Elf, and Bruce and Clint's argument over the toy. Of course like always, Darcy was a big highlight.
Do we know yet if we'll bee seeing the 616 Darcy again any time soon?

Oh OK, I thought maybe there was more to it than that.

Trying to figure out where Today's episode would take place.

Maria Hill is deputy director of SHIELD, JARVIS isn't Vision, there's Iron Man drones.
Post Dark World / Pre Age of Ultron. So, December 2014.
The only discrepancy I can see at this point is that SHIELD should be no more and Maria should be Tony's employee.

Watching episode 4 I feel like that would have made a way better Iron Man 3/Ragnarok than what we got. Probably would have been way too costly though

Very silly episode, although I would've liked to have seen more of Tony and Gamora working together. I get that's not the point of the episode but it would've been nice. Still, it was fun to see Tony being the fish out of water on Sakaar and I loved his interactions with Korg and Valkyrie, although I wish the latter had more to do than just drink and race. What I am saying is I need more Tessa Thompson, always.

And, of course, it was such watching Jeff Goldblum just hamming it up every damn second.

This one was probably the most fun one yet.
I'm so glad they got Jeff Goldblum back as The Grandmaster, I'm sure there are some actors out there who could do a decent impression, but it definitely would not have been the same.
Korg is one of my favorite MCU characters, so anytime we get more screen time for him, especially with Taika Waititi playing him, I'm happy.
Same goes for Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

Why isn’t she called Captain Britain? I enjoyed it but they should have kept Liz Olsen’s role a secret. I saw her name in the credits and I just expecting her to show up at some point in the main story. I thought she was going to be the leader of the Red Room.

2.1 - Pretty decent. Karen Gillan's Nebula voice is nice to listen to. I disliked how every side character she ran into happened to be someone we've already seen in the MCU, it makes the universe feel so small. I guess they all just happened to be on Xandar when the shield went up?

2.2 - One of the stronger episodes of the whole show. Like how the team included characters who havne't been featured much previously (Goliath! Whatever Not Annette Bening's character was called!) The story could have been enough for a two parter or at least an extended episode though, as it felt quite rushed. Would have liked to see more of the eighties Avengers together.

2.3 - Incredibly silly...but it's Christmas so I'll allow it. Kat Dennings is good at talking really fast and Lower Decks has taught me that's important in a comedy cartoon.

2.4 - The animation has improved a since season 1 and I enjoyed the racing scenes a lot. But in a show where we're visiting a multiverse of unlimited possibilities, why does every epsode (to this point anyway) have to feature the exact same "20 quips a minute" utral-quirky dialogue? How about some variations in the writing to go with the variatioins in the universe? I think it really annoyed me here because we had Korg - Korg dialed up to a thousand at that - in a suporting role for the second time in four episodes and it was too much for me. I'm looking forward to episode 6 (and possibly 8) because it's guaranteed to be something different.

2.5 - Really great action scenes and I appreciated that it was a bit more serious than the previous four.

That was Hope as the Wasp at the Battle of New York. the episode's writer explains how:

Since a few people have asked: Yes, that’s Hope at the Battle of NY. How did that happen? SPOILERS ahead…

Since Captain Carter — a woman — ended WW2, the feminist movement occurred immediately after the war. This had a ripple effect across society leading to more female SHIELD agents, heroes, & women in positions of authority. (Check out the Strike Team at min 12)

Since Peggy Carter wasn’t around to found SHIELD, that responsibility fell to Hope’s parents, Hank and Janet, and also Bucky, and his good friend, Howard Stark. All this lead to Hope taking on the Wasp mantle earlier.

Other tidbits: Bucky survived the war, and became a Jimmy Carter-esque elder statesman. Howard didn’t die in 1991. In my mind, Howard was a better father and had a closer relationship with his son.

Tony and Bruce are always and forever the mad genius science bros. (At least in my mind). The Captain Carter biopic was a musical but sadly not a Broadway play. Not yet.

Shit, I forgot to watch today's episode this morning.
*Goes to D+ to watch it and the new episode of Percy Jackson & The Olympians*

Just watched it, and it was great.
The friendship between Peggy and Natasha was a lot of fun.
The storyline was interesting combination of Black Widow and The Winter Soldier.
This one had some really great action.
It looks like Hydra must have never infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. in this universe, maybe because Steve and Bucky continued to fight them after Peggy ended up in the present.

I don't know what I expected with the Captain Carter sequel but I loved every minute of what we got. I wasn't surprised with the direct but different parallels to The Winter Soldier, while switching the roles around (including apparently good guy Rumlow!).

But what I didn't expect was seeing Rachel Weisz's name in the opening credits. I don't think I saw any pre-release articles mentioning Weisz's involvement, so that was a lovely surprise. I love how naturally Melina as the leader of the Red Room filled in the role for the HYDRA uprising and I particularly enjoyed seeing Peggy's and Natasha's stories becoming intertwined as a result.

And Peggy's story isn't over! Because Weisz wasn't the only surprise in the opening credits: Elizabeth Olsen! After being voiceless in last season's zombie episode, we get Wanda properly, with more to come! With Peggy apparently transported to a different reality with medieval versions of Fury and Wanda, I have no idea where this story is heading and that's exciting!

Just like how the 80s Avengers episode brought back Madeleine McGraw as young Hope, I noticed in the closing credits that Bernard White returned as Councilman Singh. Getting back smaller players from previous films helps make up for not getting some of the bigger names (although Lake Bell does a pretty good Natasha).

That was Hope as the Wasp at the Battle of New York. the episode's writer explains how:

Thank you for sharing this! I definitely noticed the feminist bent throughout the episode so I figured Hope as Wasp was a big part of that. Good to see that confirmed even if the details behind the whole history weren't included in the episode (but maybe in a future episode?). I love that Bucky became a Jimmy Carter-esque statesman.

The latest episode was strange. I don’t know who that person is at all. The tesseract can give you force powers it seems
