Constitution Class is a semi-retcon. The name did show up in TOS, but it's not legible.
This graphic was originally created for 'Space Seed', but none of the camera angles showed it.

It is visible in 'The Trouble with Tribbles' though.

I’m 99% sure this is from the remaster, though. A windowed desktop was an alien concept in the 60s.

The Defiant and the Enterprise have both been shown and referred to being Constitution class. They have same hull design. The same interiors. In the same era. How are they NOT the same class ship if it has been proven in dialogue and graphics?

cough, cough Sombra class cough, cough ;)

According to Mike Okuda, the reason they called it a Constitution class in TNG was because they felt that's the name most fans would have known it by.

In any case, it has been clearly established in multiple shows that the Enterprise and Defiant are Constitution class ships.
It's just that none of those shows happen to be Star Trek. :)

I'm certainly not going to get pushy on something that was accepted lore both in and out of the production offices and has been validated over the years on screen and off. It was so well established that I was well out of college (20 something years after I started watching the show) before I ever noticed that it was only ever called a Starship class on the actual show.

But if we can suddenly get wiggly about the size of the Enterprise as well as what is and isn't a K't'inga? Well, Constitution class is on much shakier ground than a lot of Star Trek facts.

I liked it better the second time around. I'm not against musicals exactly, but I feel we'd have been fine without one. That said, it's a decent production of such things.

Ummm... TNG is STAR TREK. Picard verbally called the Enterprise a Constitution class ship, which Scotty, who served aboard her as Chief Engineer, confirmed.

And the Defiant's dedication plaque shows her as Constitution class in the "IN A MIRROR, DARKLY" two-parter... which was an episode of ENT. Also a STAR TREK series.

Yes it is. It appears on the Enterprise's plaque in one of the TOS movies.

And in SNW, though in SNW they try to have it both ways

Besides, the phrase "Starship class" doesn't even make sense. It would require a USS Starship.

(Which would only work if it was named after the band. ;) )

I think they meant Starship TYPE.

Mark IV Simulator - Enterprise Class

That doesn't have to mean SHIP class. It could be the class of Academy cadets which were to be posted to...the Enterprise.

Or it's the simulator which is Enterprise class. (Makes sense, since it was in fact built to resemble the Enterprise.)
