Star Trek really doesn't feel like it has had an edge for a while. Into Darkness maybe my last edgier feel. I like Discovery but I don't think that's what is meant by fans when they ask for an edge.
I guess it depends on how we define edge. I just mean doing something that feels new and exciting; not just for Star Trek but for science fiction TV in general. Being on the forefront.

I acknowledge that can be difficult when you have a zillion hours of this IP on the books already.

SNW and Lower Decks are the flagships shows of the franchise now IMO. They're Star Trek shows made in the vein of the pop culture idea of what Star Trek is. They're shows where the characters all know they're on a Star Trek show.

Fair. I disagree on drama petering out but I appreciate your explanation.
My reasoning on the petering is that if there’s never any lasting consequences there won’t be any dramatic tension because nothing really matters. And if nothing matters people get bored and find something new to watch.
TOS paired the episodic adventure format with the warmth of close friendships, which provided a sense of continuity and stakes, because those people cared about each other and made you care about them, too.
SNW is doing a good job of portraying their crew as close friends; I especially enjoyed the scenes in Charades where Ortegas was the raconteur of the group.

More episodes means more chances to miss episodes. They could, and did, do serialized story telling before VCR's. Yes, they did do episodic TV for the sake of casual viewers but serialized TV shows were there too for those who could handle it.

I've watched soaps I know they work. Star trek was not a soap. Soaps remind the audience constantly where the story has been. TV shows like Star Trek can't do that. They don't have the luxury of hundreds of episodes like soaps do. To say 60s trek sucked because they didn't have storylines and character arcs carry over is ridiculous. Again it was the 60s to make a primetine TV show with 26 eps a years with a arc based storyline would have not made sense. Self contained stories were the way go. Soaps you can catch up months later with all the fksshbacks and repetitive dialogue.

:wtf:
What is it about SNW that makes you think that?
TBH, it's something that's difficult to articulate. There's a meta aspect to it all.

It's not just ST. It's something you see in a lot of modern productions.

it has a nearly sixty year history to draw from that many folks are familiar with. Not sure that's "meta" . No one in the shows seems to be aware they are in TV Shows.

It was the 1960s. They made every episode self contained so people wouldn't feel lost if they missed an episode. They couldn't binge or record tv back in those days. So they did the right thing.

** - Peyton Place (1964 -1969 TV series on ABC @ 9:30 PM) )has entered the Chat..
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pey...Peyton Place is an American,, to June 2, 1969.
...The show was one of the first seen on US network television to talk about sex and infidelity in a frank manner. As such, ABC executives would only allow the show to be aired at 9:30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific time, a time at which many children and teenagers were expected to be in bed. With the show in a ratings slump in 1968, the show was moved to 8:30 p.m. in order to draw the viewers they once had shunned...

TBH the two songs from the soundtrack that I keep re-listening are actually "I'm Ready" and "I'm the X". Not sure why but they're super catchy for me, moreso than the Celia Gooding and Christina Chong songs, even though I agree they are technically better singers than Jess Bush and Ethan Peck.

My third most listened to track is "Status Report".

There's a difference between leaning on the fourth wall and breaking it. The metatextual references in LDS qualify as no more extreme than leaning on it, and arguably less extreme that that. I agree with @Nerys Myk's characterization that Boimler and Mariner are Starfleet fans, not Star Trek fans.

The fact that the characters in "Subspace Rhapsody" heard the background music and knew they were singing as a result of a subspace anomaly meant that this episode didn't even get near the fourth wall, at least because of any of that.* I thought all of that was a pretty clever way to keep the music in continuity.

* - The claim that "Anson" was addressed by name is something that I missed both times I've seen the episode so far, and I'll have to check on that.

Which Star Trek no longer is, and hasn't been since VOY.

One thing I would agree on is that star trek used to do its own thing. Since Abrams everyone has wanted it to be more like Star Wars and others like the marvel universe. Star Trek had its own style in terms of tech, aliens and starfleet morals but now we see it following other franchises more and more. Not just slightly pretty much copycatting like the alien movies with the going storylines. Star trek is still good but I wish they would just do their own thing more rather than follow series or franchises the current creatirs admire.

Borrow from other places has been in Star Treks DNA since it's creation. Let's face it, Forbidden Planet's fingerprints are all over Star Trek. Trek's also borrowed from SF lit, Shakespeare. Westerns and even contemporary SF properties throughout it's run. It's visited Enemy Mine a couple of times. TMP was clearly influenced by 2001.
