After watching this again, I can say that yes it is. You can clearly hear Paul Wesley say "Good Anson!" I like that they left this in.
If you mean the line just as Pike and Kirk shake hands, the sentence being said sounds to my ear like, "We did it."

This is almost TMP Kirk leaving the airlock with visible soundstage equipment levels of obvious.

I didn't either, and I've watched the episode 5 times at least.

But it's like Tasha waving at the end of...what was it, Conspiracy? I forget. Or the various times set dressing made it on screen or a computer panel display wasn't properly mounted

Or a boom mic gets in the shot, or you can see the reflection of the camera and/or camera crew in a panel or in someone's eyeball.

And that's not even counting all the episodes filmed before high-definition television sets where you can now see the cardboard or the Philips-head screws on the sets that never used to show up on TV sets!

Mistakes happen, no TV production is perfect, and we gotta suspend disbelief sometimes. None of it means anything's de-canonized.

There's a boom mic shadow visible in "The Ultimate Computer(TOS)" just before Spock nerve pinches the erratic Dr. Richard Daystrom on the bridge.

But that wouldn't have been nearly as funny!

I mean, the Klingons literally attempted to act with a genocidal negligence that would have killed billions of people, and they sang about their desire to impale every single Federate aboard the Enterprise. They're not acting as semi-allies.

The Klingon military was first explicitly established to be named the Klingon Defense Force in TNG S317 "Sins of the Father," which aired in 1990. It was referred to as the Klingon Defense Force or the Klingon Defense Forces subsequently in episodes such as "Sons of Mogh," "Soldiers of the Empire," and "Favor the Bold." So as far as the idea that Klingons wouldn't call it a defense force, that ship sailed 33 years ago.

Interestingly, the Klingon Defense Force seems not to have existed during the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257 seen in DIS Season One. In that war, each individual House had its own fleet and its own soldiers. So the Defense Force seems to be new -- presumably one of Chancellor L'Rell's innovations, to better unite the Empire by establishing a single imperial military.

I really appreciate that attitude. Even if one doesn't like something, I think it's really important for Star Trek to have room for creative experimentation, room to break out of its own formulae. Without that kind of experimentation, a franchise or a series will eventually become creatively stagnant and die off -- like what happened in the final years of VOY and ENT, frankly.

By the same token, I prefer the makeup design for the Klingons seen in SNW, but I'm really glad DIS had the creative freedom to establish a new Klingon makeup design. Even if I didn't always prefer how the results turned out, I wanted them to have the freedom to take those kinds of chances.

I dunno man. I don't think it's the fact that she was willing to break up with him to pursue the fellowship that broke his heart. I think it was the fact that she didn't trust him enough to come to him with the news first, and that she immediately jumped to assuming he was going to ask her to stay when all he asked was why she didn't talk to him before literally everyone else.

Basically, Spock wanted to know that he was special to her, that she trusted him. And... she doesn't.

Which is, ironically, exactly what happened between Spock and T'Pring.

Accidentally leaving in a "well done Anson" or whatever no more makes "Subspace Rhapsody" not-canon than, say, the main view screen on the bridge of the NX-01 replaced with a step-ladder, lights, and the interior of a soundstage means that ENT "Bound" isn't canon.

The first half of "Status Report" is amazing. I love the "Apologies" chorus and the way it builds tension. But the second half loses a lot of the tension the first half built up with the "everything's okay" lines.

As a veteran of two different productions of Cole Porter's Anything Goes, it pains me to hear you attribute a (deeply problematic) classic of American musical theatre to an Indiana Jones movie. ;)

That may be how she saw it, but... you know, part of being in a relationship that goes beyond just a casual fling -- even if you haven't fully decided what you want from your partner and haven't made a full commitment yet -- is that you make their feelings a priority. Doesn't mean it's the only priority. Doesn't mean she should have put her relationship with Spock above her career prospects. She made the right choice by taking the fellowship.

But it was incredibly disrespectful and insensitive to Spock to talk to everyone else about it before him. I'm sorry, but it's not being sensitive to talk to him later -- it's actively being insensitive, because it demonstrates a lack of trust and it privileges randos in the mess hall over her semi-partner. It was deeply inconsiderate.

And then, when asked why she didn't talk to him, she seemed to be reacting in her song as though Spock was asking her not to go. Which he never did.

I understand where Christine's coming from, but she allowed her insecurity over her relationship with Spock push her into being really insensitive and disrespectful. Spock has a right to be upset.

Although, again, her keeping this from Spock isn't much different from Spock keeping his emergency secret from T'Pring in "Charades."

Possibly, but even then, she ought to know better. In a situation like that, you should talk to your partner. Share your concerns and trust them! Work with them to figure it out!

Anyway, this is not bad writing at all. It's very emotionally honest writing -- people get like this sometimes! But it's frustrating to see those kids go through this, dangit!
All fair points. It may be simply that Spock and Chapel are too different in how they approach a relationship. Perhaps it would be better they stayed friends. Regardless, this episode does an excellent job laying the path for cooler, logical Spock in TOS.

Klingon opera would have been so much better, or a warrior's drinking song. None of this boy-band dishonor.

Also, a couple nitpicks with SNW and its relationship with the Klingons:

1. Quit treating the Klingons as semi-allies. At this stage, pre-Organia, things are unremittingly hostile. There should be a skirmish of some kind every time they are encountered- not "Spock soothed it over by drinking blood wine." GTFO with that bullshyte.

2. "Imperial Klingon Defense Force?" GTFO with that too. It's the Imperial Klingon Fleet, or the Imperial Klingon Navy. The Klingons play offense, not defense. They aren't a bunch of milk-drinking Earthers, whose ships should be hauled away as garbage!
With the Klingons singing lyrics to the Federation like:

"Your death is my dream...make you all scream!"

IDK where you get the idea that the Klingons are portrayed as 'semi-allies''?

(Not to mention Spock having to get drunk on blood wine to keep the Klingons from attacking in BOTH this and the first S2 episode.)

That's the post-Khitomer, touchy-feely, 'we're all friends now and we let Klingons into Starfleet' TNG era, sport, not the TOS era. :klingon:

This would have been an excellent place for the "I hate you" song from ST IV to get its third appearance.

"Well we...eschew you
And the empire, says SCREW YOU!
And I, (Insert name), hate you too!"

Well, you answered your own question. Apparently Spock and the Klingons are drinking buddies now.

The Klingons aren't even on friendlier, more stable terms with the Federation until TUC and afterwards. One can say that General Korrd's assistance in defusing the Great Barrier incident might have spread some good word back to the High Council but we simply don't know.

Indeed. Most of the post-war Klingons in the TOS series and TOS films were more a Cold War, uneasy peace. Aside from small, hot skirmishes, it was mostly a MAD situation.

It wasn't until after Khitomer that the Klingons actually became something more like allies. So what we're seeing in SNW is perfectly consistent.

Spock's a future Ambassador. He knows how to negotiate and how to tailor it to his opposite number.
Koloth was totally in a K-Pop band
Now I want to see Spock and Sarek comparing notes on their diplomatic techniques when they reconcile after Journey to Babel.

I pulled it up again, with the sound system boosting for vocals, and still heard Anson. Still, it is discrete, and I could be wrong.
