Canon.

I will say this. Paul Wesley finally sold me on his version of Jim Kirk. His conversation with La'an about Carol was spot on.
Yeah. I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge fan of him in his season one finale appearance, but he’s really grown on me.

I don’t really want him to become a regular because we have such a strong ensemble and so few episodes to spend with them, but if the show goes long enough that we get to see him take over the center seat, I’ll be happy to see him there.

As opposed to the Robin Hood episode, the Halloween episode, the Jack the Ripper episode, or, on a more dramatic note, the time Sisko slipped into the Twilight Zone and became a 1950s sci-fi writer?

Trek gets fanciful sometimes. It always has.
I'm still trying to figure out when Star Trek became only serious business and never fanciful space adventure. 'Cause I seem to recall Balance of Terror existing side by side with Trouble with Tribbles, and Mudd's planet with a bunch of duplicate androids.

he’s grown on me too, but it feels
Like he’s gotten more focus this season than Erica has and she’s a main character.

I don’t fault people for not liking it - everyone has their tastes - but yea there are a subset of people who only think Trek can be one thing (usually clouded by nostalgia). Like I’ve seen people argue that every classic trek episode was a high quality morality play and ..well…nope. But they’re mainly just having memories of the better or classic episodes in my opinion.

Yeah. He was used too much this season. I guess because Anson Mount was taking some paternity leave?

I'm just still not seeing Kirk in him.

He's a fine actor and all but he's just missing the charisma and charm of classic Kirk. Hell, the guy playing Sam feels more like a Jim Kirk.

after today’s episode my son told me he just pretends it’s just another LT and not Kirk

TOS had some stinkers, some *real* stinkers, as did TAS, TNG, DS9 (as a Niner, I have to admit this), VOY, ENT, and the modern treks.

So it doesn't bother me when someone says they didn't like this episode or that episode of the new shows, because that's a matter of opinion. It's the people who declare that NONE of this is Star Trek and anyone who watches it isn't a fan. Not saying anyone is doing this at the moment, just... you know, it's grating. I mean, if you hate it, why are you here? Why bother people who love it?

I wasn't big on VOY for the longest time, and I had criticisms, but I never just went into the VOY thread and said "none of you are real Star Trek fans, this show is garbage!" I could never do that, because that would be diminishing other people's enjoyment and for what? I'm not gaining anything from it except some sense of smug superiority complex by being the last living Trek fan in existence. I don't think I could ever live that way, reveling in making people miserable for watching a show they like.

The elephant in the room for this episode is of course Buffy's 'Once More With Feeling'. If you're going to do an episode where magical forces make serious people sing their inner truths, that is the gold standard.

In terms of emotional themes it's basically the same thing. And it's just not as good.

It's too bad that Admiral Cartwright couldn't have turned up here. Brock Peters could really handle that baritone. Quite ironically, one of his best singing roles was in Lost in the Stars.

I stopped comparing Wesley's Kirk to any other version after the time travel episode.

Kirk and Spock are the only two characters I found myself comparing to their original versions. I mean, it's Kirk and Spock. But even then, I questioned the usefulness of it. This is a fresh take that does not need to match any prior performance.
