Possibly.
Kirk could also blame himself for not being more like his dad and not doing more to stop it.

Pike does ask Kirk to confirm, so they're not entirely going off Uhura.Pike's a mench and all, but he's destroying a major bit of Starfleet infrastructure on the word of an ensign that it's all been figured out, with no corroborating evidence. No command structure in the world would work like this, and it wouldn't have taken more than a few additional lines to "fix" the issue via some technobabble regarding having the ship detect the aliens.
I'm going to say the same thing about this episode as I said about the Tomorrow episode. Why is Kirk here? I feel like the writers have already abandoned the idea that this show was supposed to be the adventures of Pike and Crew and Kirk is just in the way. Why couldn't this be an Uhura and M'Benga episode, or a Uhura and Pike episode? I liked the idea of aliens in the Deuterium (Even though it reminded me a little of TNG's Force of Nature, or as fans fondly refer to it, as the Warp limit episode) and the revelation was actually pretty well done. However, for Hemmer's return and just this episode as a whole, Kirk didn't need to be there and I'm already getting a little tired of Wesley's portrayal..
Kirk: Seriously doc? Your sickbay is so unsecured that dangerous hallucinating patients just run off? And I checked your file, this is not the first time this has happened. Dr. Mark Piper on the Farragut would never make such a mistake. No lines like: "you seem like a solid kinda Starfleet officer and I hope I have someone like you on my ship one day." Just handshakes, normal dialogue and casual drinks.
Aww, he brought Dr. Piper with him. That's sweet.Kirk: Seriously doc? Your sickbay is so unsecured that dangerous hallucinating patients just run off? And I checked your file, this is not the first time this has happened. Dr. Mark Piper on the Farragut would never make such a mistake.
M'Benga:![]()
People kept telling me that Kirk wasn't a problem.THIS x 1000! WE DON'T NEED TO SEE KIRK EVER AGAIN IN THIS SERIES!
I swear, Kirk has gotten more screen time this season than Pike!
To some degree. Bob Orci said that he believed that Kirk and Spock's first meeting was also after Kirk cheated on the Kobyashi Maru at the Academy in the Prime Timeline. Yet as Spock and Kirk make no reference to such a meeting in this episode and act like they never met before, this is clearly not the case.
That's true, except Spock says he remembers how Kirk cheated on the Kobayashi Maru in Wrath of Khan with the implication that he was there for that (or at the very least heard about it at the time it happened). Now that line will have to be retconned into Kirk describing how he cheated to Spock years after the fact.Yes. If Kirk is moving up to XO of the Farragut then the implication is that he has already been back to Starfleet Academy for Command School, taken the Kobayashi Maru test, and served as an instructor. (hence Gary Mitchell's quip in WNMHGB: in Lieutenant Kirk's class, you think or you sink) It's pretty unreasonable to think that Spock and he would have intersected before now, except by pure random chance. As soon as Kirk takes over as XO, he'll probably be promoting to LCDR, depending on how big the Farragut is.
It should, but not necessarily in this episode.Tarsus IV should've been mentioned if at least only between the Kirk brothers. James has angst about being shuttled from place to place as a kid because of his dad's job. He probably would resent his dad for getting him in the middle of that massacre. Yet James seemed to be defending him to Sam
The line is ambiguous:That's true, except Spock says he remembers how Kirk cheated on the Kobayashi Maru in Wrath of Khan with the implication that he was there for that (or at the very least heard about it at the time it happened). Now that line will have to be retconned into Kirk describing how he cheated to Spock years after the fact.
Did anyone else figure out after the first few times Uhura heard the droning sound that it was clearly some alien species trying to communicate with her? Maybe the episode title gave it away too much, but I felt a little let down by what I feel like was supposed to be a surprise. When she and The Kirk Bros. figured it out I was just like, "Well, duh." Otherwise, it was a solid episode and very much in keeping with the best traditions of Trek.
Sam was being totally unreasonable and had no legitimate reason to be mad at Jim. Was he supposed to hold himself back so he wouldn't make his brother look bad? That's silly. The mention of George Kirk being XO of the Kelvin was neat, though.
Kinda wish we had seen Kirk and La'an share that drink. But seeing him meet Pike (per canon, when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. That was well done) and meet Spock were really cool moments.
He was a gateway Kirk.I'm not loving this whole thing of having Sam Kirk on the Enterprise. We don't need to see Jim Kirk in this series IMHO, so we definitely don't need his brother either, who showed up already deceased in a single episode of TOS. To me this was always an odd choice on the part of the show-runners.
La'an: Spock, fancy seeing you here. What are you doing here?Inasmuch as we don't need to see Kirk EVER AGAIN on this show, letting go the whole La'an thing seems like a good move. I did think the Spock / Kirk handshake was kinda neat.
Really, that bar with the giant chandelier compared to the horrid break room where they played cards, or whatever.

Hmmm...
TAS is basically broad strokes canon especially due to the specific references to Spock 2 in Lower Decks. We know there was a holodeck-style rec room in the 1701 per TAS. It probably wouldn't hurt canon too much to have this room show up in SNW.It also seems that things like VR, holodecks, and other distractions would be available in the 23rd Century. You'd definitely need something to stop the crew from climbing the walls after a few months underway with no breaks, especially when you consider that even with warp drive, transits between systems could take weeks or even months.
I wanted Pike as well. But, as soon as Kirk is introduced this is exactly what I expected to happen. Two things can be true. Kirk isn’t a problem and the scene talking about death was a good one. However, I think M’benga could have still delivered the same line with the same gravitas as Kirk did. My issue really isn’t the episode itself but more the feeling that they sidelined Pike for Pikes successor. Yes I know Mount added to his family and I don’t know the scheduling but season 2 is almost over and Pike still feels sidelined. I didn’t want another original series with Kirk and Spock. I wanted Pike and Spock.
What canon? I believe SNW has trampled all over it canon at this point, or so I've been told.TAS is basically broad strokes canon especially due to the specific references to Spock 2 in Lower Decks. We know there was a holodeck-style rec room in the 1701 per TAS. It probably wouldn't hurt canon too much to have this room show up in SNW.
