Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

First, I want to apologise to you all.

I asked some questions a few days back, and leapt ahead without giving you all chance to ponder them/reply if you wanted. I wasn't expecting to get as far with this project as I did this weekend. I am getting... Quicker at building these ships. Gone are the days when it would take me years (cough *original Ingram project*) to do things as I was still learning this witch-craftery that is 3D Modelling. This ship could be finished by the upcoming weekend. I don't talk about my autism that much (ha!), but on of the facets of it is hyper-focusing - and that seems to be the case here. Still, that is not an excuse for bad manners.

In future when I ask a question I'll give it a few days before I act.

More later.

State of play as of this morning,

Numerous bugs fixes and mesh errors sorted. Can now move on to the Engineering hull -

I don't think this is something you should ever feel the need to apologize about, to be honest. This is your project and your personal time spent on working on it — wanting to include the people here in your design decisions is pretty awesome of you and I'm sure everyone here appreciates the opportunity. But you should never feel like you owe anyone anything here when it comes to your art. Finding the time and energy to work on a personal project can be quite difficult, so you shouldn't have to wait for people's notes to continue working when you're in a creative bout. :)

That said, I love how your newest design comes along! I'm vaguely reminded of my own Malala design I did a few years ago for one of the monthly challenges. Its saucer was inspired by the Oberth as well …

Thank you. I know how... Frustrating I can be. My partner of 20+ years still has to put me in time outs, lol.

The Malala is beautiful, retro and yet futuristic. Lovely.

Updates - work on the lower hull is under way -

The shield grid is - as always - fun to build in. Rest of the details and markings will come. Tweaked the layout of hull parts a little, she's still 275 meters long, but height and width have changed a little. I'll report the final figures when she is done.

More later.

I really like the Malala design.

BTW: While merely a hypothetical, have you considered lowering the nacelles slightly? I might be able to draw it out crudely...

If you're referring to what I'm working on (and not the Malala) I have played around with the positions of the various elements of the ship, whilst still trying to retain the silhouette of the original. If you mean just moving the nacelles down without changing the pylons, I have a little wiggle room. If you mean moving where the pylons connect to the hull, that could be a problem. But if you can mock something up, I'll have a look and see what can be done.

Afternoon!

State of play -

Secondary Hull still needs to be finished (the top parts are still lacking the details I love to build into these ships). Shuttle bay? Why not. I'm getting better at building the internals. And of course a self lighting rig needs to be added. I might play with the texture colours as well, but not too much. I have some thoughts on those sensor pallets and how to blend them better with the ship.

Anyways, comments always welcome - more soon!

I'm loving this, it's different, but really fits in with the rest of the fleet!

Looking at the line just under the photon launcher, it almost looks as though the whole lower half of the engineering section can be removed, and swapped over for a different one, depending on the mission. Which would really make sense for a science vessel on various duties!

It has the right feel for the Excelsior era of TMP, when Starfleet were being more experimental and trying out different ideas. I can say from an engineers POV the ship makes better sense in this configuration; the intermix core sits better in the hull, and by shoving the shuttle bay down to the lower part of the secondary hull space is used more efficiently. Tom Sutton likely wasn't thinking along those lines when he drew this version of the Surak - but it works well. Maybe it doesn't fit aesthetically with the rest of the fleet and how ships were put together, but making sense of these ships is always fun lol.

As for your idea: it's a thought, although we are talking a large hull part to swap out, but why not? That line is below engineering so it could work. Not something I'm going to explore (except as a thought experiment), but it's a nice idea.

Nor more renders today. Had a wee problem with my blood pressure (apparently you need to have some blood pressure to live, and my body didn't get that memo, lol) so am resting up with the laptop, and watching cheesy movies for the rest of the day (orders from the doctors and my better half), and in my fifties I have learned to do as I'm told (mostly).

So more tomorrow!

Coming along nicely, and feel better soon, and yes, listen to the doc, they annoyingly know what's good for you.. :rommie::p
