Pike says this week in SNW that they were rushing to the Vega colony after the first Rigel mission to ensure Spock didn't become a 4th casualty. Maybe Spock's unique hybrid physiology did require special Vega colony attention for some reason. However, as of the Cage the Rigel incident was 2 weeks ago, Spock was on duty with nothing worse than a limp. Whatever injury Spock suffered, it must have been slow acting that weeks could pass, and also not debilitating enough that he could perform duty as normal throughout the Cage. I'm really wondering what weapon those barbaric, primitive Kalar used, that could produce such a slow acting and specific threat to Spock, now...

That makes only the second mention of the Vega Colony in onscreen canon post- "Cage." The other was in "Twilight(ENT)."

The Enterprise seems the ultimate Smart Home. It can identify you and guide you to your room using keyed illumination. It can make suggestions about how to deal with problems. It does this patiently and efficiently.

Are the hand controls inside the turbolift merely decorative?

That's some comforting AI they've got working for them.

I liked it, and thought it was sweet when Ortegas was essentially holding onto the computer's voice for a lifeline. "Miss? "Ma'am?"

Great performance by Melissa Navia.

Well I for one, thought it was a lovely episode.

Also I can't believe we still don't know Captain Batel's first name. I was sure the script was going to drop it in that lat moment between her and Pike!
It's not as bad as the unnecessary mystery around Uhura's name in Star Trek 2009

Good premise that took some time to build up, but also featured some padding. Like the talk between Pike, M'benga, and the old man. Entertaining, but still padding. I don't get why Spock thought flying into the asteroid field would help block the radiation. He seemed to be working on supposition, which would seem to contradict his attitude toward making assumptions earlier in the episode. Also, how could the fort being built out of ore from the asteroid block the radiation, if the asteroid was the source of the radiation in the first place? In addition, Ortegas was seemingly able to overcome the effects of the radiation by sheer force of will. With all that being said, I am proud to have seen this episode, as it seems to be the closest to a Star Trek adaptation of Philip Jose Farmers short story Sketches Among the Ruins of My Mind, a story which actually started as a treatment for a TOS episode. Much like this episode, the story deals with people gradually losing their memories over time, and explores how our experiences and memories define who we are and our relationship with others, although this episode has a more upbeat ending.

Pike confides in Batel about his delta radiation vision, and she realizes that he's told a bunch of people about it. Later on, after a vicious argument, Batel sabotages the warp engine of a cadet ship that Pike is inspecting, knowing that since Pike had already been so chatty about what was going to happen (Number One immediately starts going on about how the foretold accident finally arrived and that Pike claimed it was inevitable), no one would ever suspect that Batel was responsible.
