Giving STO Another Try

^^^I know the consoles are somewhat behind the PC when it comes to events, but you might get something when its starts on console, which console are you playing it on just out of curiosity?
XBox. Sadly, I've long-since accepted that my console gets everything later than PC. I'm an achievement whore, though, and I've spent so much time and effort developing my character, I can't justify starting all over again on another platform. Just can't bring myself to do it.

There were a couple of things that popped up in the Zen Store under the "Promotions" section, but not nearly as much as was publicized for PC users. I mean, hell, they finally released the TWOK monster maroon on XBox back in 2021 after other platforms had it for years. I guess it had been a PlayStation exclusive for a while which necessarily prevented Xbox players from getting it, which I found somewhat crappy. It is what it is, I guess.

I think you need to claim them from the xbox store before they appear in game, and i am sure there is still a free bundle with a gun, pet and a few keys still on the xbox store for free, you should check it out.

Ah! I do look the XBox store periodically and I haven't seen extras like that in a REALLY long time in there. Last I checked, there was the usual set of Zen purchase bundles and a couple of Zhat Vash weapons from PIC S1, but that's it. Maybe I need to go back and take a closer look. It's been a while...

I keep trying to get back into this game, but it plays like a badly-optimized PS2 game.

Is there a decent guide to the basics - controls, UI and the like? I've not played in years but am thinking of giving it another go. I remember the UI being a bit of a mess last time I played.

Basically mouse and keyboard, auto fire your weapons in space and on ground, leave you to click your buffs with the mouse, keyboard controlls the ship and on ground.......that is about it really.

There might be some YouTube videos out there that help with the controls.

I would just hope they're more informative than the recent vids about how to use the Spiderman web shooter device in the last season of Fortnite. Every single damn video said it "works like it did the last time they had it in the game several seasons back". This was a profoundly unhelpful and frustrating thing for someone like me who only just started late last year and have no idea how it worked "several seasons back". Idiots...

I have a love/hate relationship with it. Some of the avatars are really impressively rendered (I particularly like the Samurai and Raven characters) and I found the Star Wars sub-season quite enjoyable. Having played a number of Jedi/Sith games over the years, I positively rocked the lightsabers and force pushes.

The latest "jungle" biome is astoundingly cool to look at. You can tell a LOT of work went into building it, but I greatly dislike being there. Too much environmental business going on - you'd think it would be great for tactical concealment, but not really, as there are "thermal" fish you can eat and other kinds of augments that allow others to see you clearly through the foliage (think Predator), defeating the tactical advantage. Plus the velociraptors and wasps running around everywhere piss me off.

The quests are an interesting way of coaxing players into exploring weapons and locations that they might not usually care about. However, on more than a dozen occasions, I was killed in the process of focusing on completing the quests requiring some crappy rifle or checking completion lists, despite being hidden, instead of focusing on making sure I wasn't getting ambushed.

The game itself is extremely glitchy and I'm pretty sure I've run into a number of players running cheat mods on PC's. I once hid in a bush near the end of a session and someone walked right in front of me - didn't even notice I was there. I unloaded my legendary auto shotgun point-blank right into their ass and not one hit was registered. They spun around and took me out with a single shot of a sniper rifle and won the Victory Royale. I think I destroyed a controller that day.

I really honestly don't know whether or not to keep playing, but my wife and daughter are heavily into it, with a bunch of friends online, and it has become quite an effective family game-night kind of thing, so...

Who would have thought way back in 2010 that STO would still be around to see the Enterprise F and G on screen and then in game.
Certainly not me as the game's launch was a disaster. It was a two faction game and only Federation had a playable storyline and many of the missions were bugged. There were no cutscenes like there are now so everything was read in the diologue box. Klingons had to PVP to advance, which made them a non starter for players that only PVE . Space was fun but ground combat was God awful. The short two year development time really showed in a bad way and it didn't take long for the game to go FTP. It also didnt help that Cryptic had horrible customer service and tended to be major douchebags to people that brought up these shortcomings.

I quite after three months and only came back a few years ago. The game has grown by leaps and bounds and is actually a fun experience. So many things have been added: duty officers, reputation, cut scenes, new factions and races to play outside federation and klingon, countless ships and perks, improved ground combat plus so much more. I'm also happy to say customer service for the game is much improved as I've had good experiences the few times I've needed a problem fixed.

^^I miss the fun of ground missions back then when you would have to wait for players who crashed out to desktop to come back into the game. lol

^^^ At some point, they couldn't. CTD's often resulted in temporary bans from rejoining TFO's for about 30 minutes. The game couldn't tell the difference between crashes and intentional quits. That was a frequent occurrence a couple of years ago, at least on the XBox. Thankfully they got the picture from the user base quickly and fixed it. I think it took them about a month to lock it down. It was during the height of COVID and they were still working on getting people set up to work from home.

It was a dark time...
