News Star Trek Prodigy Cancelled, Season 2 to be shopped around

The fact that SNW and Lower Decks had "already renewed for Season X" announcements but Prodigy didn't was the telltale sign for me. They didn't know what to do with the show.

Wasn't that news earlier this year that Prodigy was renewed for a second season though? It's one thing to be cancelled, but to remove the series on a streamer for "Everything Trek" doesn't make sense to me.

I suspect Lower Decks is next for the chopping block so that SNW will be the only produced Trek show. Then they'll see if there's money left over (seems unlikely since Paramount is still bleeding money in streaming) for a followup to Picard. Unless Patrick's recent noise about making another movie means he already knows something and there won't be a new tv show, just occasional movies.

Nothing is safe anymore. Prodigy at least will have a physical release, which Willow at Disney Plus didn't even get.

I'm really disappointed by this, but I'm not surprised.

From what I recall, Prodigy was essentially developed as a "loss leader" due to fiat of Kurtzman, who thought Star Trek needed to have something akin to Clone Wars to help bring a new generation of viewers in. But in the end it seems like its audience was just a portion of the existing Trek fandom, and it didn't really convert that many kids.

Not surprised to hear it's being scrubbed from the site - that's the way it goes these days. I am surprised to hear they're still shopping it around though and finishing production since that doesn't seem to jibe with either writing it down as a loss or keeping all Trek IP on Paramount+. Maybe it will be sold for cheap to Netflix or something?

I wonder if it vanishes from streaming entirely it will still be considered part of Trek canon? I mean, that's Paramount essentially erasing it from existing anywhere.

I'm surprised, but not too surprised, because Prodigy didn't seem to create much buzz. It took me a while to get into it, but I'm glad I did because I wound up really liking the first season. It had one of the better Trek first seasons in the franchise. I wish that the Second Season would be on Paramount Plus instead of them shopping it around. I mean, who would want to buy it if it wasn't successful on Plus or Nickelodeon?

Hadn't considered it, but Prodigy could be easily excised from Trek canon.

The announcement was that the second season was going to air, it had be renewed during the first season. But when they started announcing the airdates of the second season of Strange New Worlds and 4th(?) Season of Lower Decks, on these poster-like adverts, both those announcements also mentioned the both shows had been renewed for another season. No such message came with the announcement of Prodigy's second season airing. It was a notable absence.

I was assuming it would be during the Holiday Season (Or at least October) just like last year. When they had the posters for last year, it did include Prodigy and said late 2021. I was just going by what they had done originally.

Because of this, I think Lower Decks is the next to go. Hopefully we get Season 4 before the announcement though but now I'm not so sure.

Yes, because it's in the can.

A death knell for streaming at least. Hopefully Hollywood learns something.

I mean will Paramount+ be around long enough to host the entirety of Season 2, it seems like it might be shuttered soon and the shows shipped off to somewhere else.

And Hollywood never learns, they're still making superhero movies even though The Flash bombed and the MCU is losing its luster.

I’m stunned. Prodigy was very good.

this certainly can’t bode well for a SNW S4 or Lower Decks S5.

If Paramount+ is in such a bad place it can't keep any of the Star Trek shows going, then it might as well just sell out to Amazon Prime or Apple TV+ right now, because they don't have much of anything else on the service that gets views other than the Yellowstone franchise.

I am bummed and pissed. I had no expectations but wow it was fantastic! The first season was tremendous. I actually like it better than LD. I really hope someone picks it up.

It might get to the point that there will be 3 streaming channels. P+ will not be one of them.

Also the powers that be made a huge mistake going with Academy and not Legacy. I just don't think young adults will watch Academy just like kids didn't watch Prodigy.
