TV Guide featuring Voyager, "most promising and risky Star Trek yet!"

There's overlap between the three. And the best episodes aren't that far apart... Inner Light, Year of Hell, The Visitor, Best of Both Worlds, Scorpion... they're all up there.

For me it's purely a character/location thing. I like to spend time with the crew of Voyager and I like to feel I am onboard Voyager.

That Voyager has the characters with the most potential often squandered is besides the point. I like Janeway, the EMH, Seven etc.

I agree with this, however on a good day I'd actually put VOY above TNG and DS9 as well.

I mean, they all have their high points and low points. You know I'm not a huge fan of TNG, but even that is not a completely honest answer because certain episodes I thoroughly enjoy. I just don't enjoy the majority of them so I don't call myself a "fan" of them."

Same with Voyager. There are several episodes that I find fun and enjoyable viewing. It's just not something I go "Oh, I must watch that." I mean, there are few shows that I do feel that way about, but if I have to make a distinction (barely) between the two then that's it.

Whenever I see a picture of Tim Russ smiling I get freaked out for a minute.

I think Voyager was new and risky in some ways. Just not as much as it could have been under different circumstances. But that’s true about a lot of things. Things could always take MORE chances. But it’s hard to look back and see something as a radical change after time has gone by.

I personally think one of the best things about Trek being a franchise of different shows is that a lot more people can enjoy it. TNG always speaks to me the most. But certain things I only get out of Voyager. I love that people get so excited by Prodigy say, even though I don’t really get into animated stuff myself.

What is it the Vulcan’s say? Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

I think Voyager is great for what it is. Even if I’d also like a show of what it could have been.

I always thought Voyager made much better use out of both Q and Lieutenant Broccoli. They also added much needed details to the Borg.

Way more than simply “TNG light“, it was more like “TNG heavy…”

Voyager is a show that I think has aged very well. Back in the day, it always ran into comparisons to DS9, which ran concurrenty - and was certainly more "risky". But today, one can watch it as simply more, good ol', straightforward Star Trek, and in far more cases than not, it fully delivers that. I used to be very critical of VGR, but I've really come around to it in the years since it ended. By contrast, with ENT, which I am currently rewatching for the first time since 2005, I am not having quite as many moments watching where I conclude that what I'm seeing is better than I remembered it.

It probably helps that Seven and Janeway are starting in nu-Trek series, and we've seen several other characters make smaller appearances: Tuvok on "Picard", Paris on "Lower Decks", and Chakotay on "Prodigy" (and Harry might show up there as well). VOY is a good show for when you want to watch classic Trek, but you're not up for a binge.

It's like an extension of TNG in that respect: easier to process and less up front investment, whether you're jumping in early or late series (compare this to the tail-end of DS9, where it isn't as easy to enter at random thanks to the serial nature of The Dominion War).

Very true. That's why I typically watch more TNG and VOY than DS9. Maybe if it ever becomes possible to watch Paramount Plus on my TV, that might change, but bingeing on a smartphone? Ucchhh.

I was getting Paramount+ as a perk added to my Walmart plus account. Apparently it just ended, sometimes they slap it on to other services, but it’s always very temporary.

Also Troi got to do actual counseling on VOY, some of her better stuff until PIC.

I watched it when it aired as a kid and have been rewatching it on PlutoTV and I feel like the show was a lot better than people gave it credit for. Sure they don't develop as many characters as DS9 did but DS9 was exceptional in their character development, everybody had an arc. That's not true of most Trek at the time.

But VOY holds up to TNG and TOS in how well they do (or don't) develop characters. Like yeah the writers have their favorite trio but that's true of TNG and TOS as well.VOY has some good Trek concepts like "Blink of an Eye", and some morality plays like "Death Wish" and "Latent Image"
