Having not watched "Arena" until later on I do wonder what people expected from the Gorn after airing?

People didn't expect anything. Trek episodes were one-and-done. Like the first real repetition was when the Klingons showed up again in the second year.

I just hope Pike stays exactly as he is, Una gets some kind of exemption and can stay, Spock remains interesting, Uhura does less ba-ba-baa-baaah (that's how you get a comet to lower its shields: eeehehhhaaaahyyyuuuaaaagh ), Ortegas gets more fun flying to do, La'an loses her constantly sour face, M'Benga finds a lozenge or 50 in a drawer, Chapel stays as she is, and we see an adult TOS-esque Gorn

That would make the most sense, as the concern is based on Khan, who was human. Perhaps they'll mention the Denobulans as an example where genetic modification didn't have bad consequences.

True, but that could also be a post-Dominion War development wherein the lessons learned from using the strategic brainstorming and advice of Julian's genetically-modified friends (as well as Bashir's own exemplary service record during the war) could have led the Federation to be more open-minded about being flexible with the DNA resequencing ban after, say, 2375.

Definitely 'cackle'.

Turns out though, the Gorn in Arena doesn't so much cackle as make a reptilian hiss with the occasional chuckle.

"Children of the Comet." Uhura has everyone one intonate to get the comet to respond. It doesn't translate well in text.

It was also one of the best episodes of the season so doesn't translate well in barely coherent whining, either.

I think one of the things I felt after watching Arena (Which was pretty later on, like in the 2000s) was can we see the Metrons again? They should have shown up in Voyager or something.

I didn't know he was coming back. That's pretty cool. I guess maybe in Flashbacks or are they going to "Culber" Hemmer because of the backlash?
