Spoilers Canon, Continuity, and Pike's Accident

It's not like Kirk had all this time to piece it together. The Gorn as a upright starship commander might not fit his expectations.

This phrasing could be handwaved due to, in-universe, the TOS Gorn also not being anything like SNW Gorn and Kirk recognizing that.

Exactly. For all we know it's the first time he's ever seen an adult Gorn.

Or perhaps there's more then one type of Gorn. Use Dogs for example...

On the left, my cute little purebred Beagle named Bruce. On the right, a giant ass Irish Wolf Hound!

They're both "Dogs."

James Kirk fights an Augment virus Klingon just before TOS.

Kirk: I'm engaged in personal combat with a creature apparently called a Klingon.

The Klingons were so offended by this statement that they declared a renewal of hostilities with the Federation leading to the cold war seen in TOS. All Klingon military were staffed solely with augment virus Klingons just to troll Kirk.

There were several attempts to bring the Gorn onto Enterprise, with the most notable being the episode The Andorian Incident, which had originally been pitched as The Gorn Incident.

SNW's Gorn is still a mess though. Keep in mind that in the Kelvin timeline McCoy says in 'Star Trek Into Darkness': "Sweetheart, I once performed an emergency C-section on a pregnant Gorn. Octuplets. And let me tell you, those little b------- bite."

Unless the Gorn literally evolved after 2233, the Gorn reproduction as described by Kelvin timeline McCoy is not reconcilable with what's seen in Strange New Worlds.

Kelvin timeline Gorn are also supposedly from another galaxy, according to that video game that tied in with STID. Best not to use that as a precedent for anything.

First, does any of this actually matter if you’re entertained?
Second, we’re Star Trek fans. We’ve explained away James R. Kirk, Vulcanians, UESPA, non-spotted Trills, and many, many other things that don’t work exactly right. If continuity is so important and you’ve stretched yourself into pretzels making the first 50 years of Star Trek fit together, then why can’t you make this work?
I've always accepted that every time travel adventure ends up changing something. First Contact being the mother of all Time Treks, creating a new history with Enterprise onward, and every visual reboot/story retcon they come up with has been altered since 2063, just like with the Kelvin movies, everything Enterprise+ is post First Contact history change.

creating a new history with Enterprise onward
Except the events of the Enterprise Borg Episode lead to the Borg in TNG. And Voyager makes reference to the events of First Contact leading to the Federation existing.

First Contact is a pre-destination paradox. Unless Voyager and TNG are also in this alternate timeline.

If Picard follows from Voyager and TNG, then yes, the timeline changes would apply to them as well.

a timeline so identical to the last the Ent-E crew didn't notice any differences when returning home?

How do we know they didn't notice? After all the time/dimensional travel they've done, I'm sure they'd expect changes. Remember, an earlier draft of FC had Picard end up taking Cochrane's place, who had been killed. That would have resulted in a clear change in history considering Cochrane's appearance in TOS. So either way, whether the original draft or the final version, they stepped on an awful lot of butterflies for there NOT to be changes.
