Scotty on DS9

Of course, Scotty didn't realize that Worf had brawled alongside him in the K-7 station bar. The two might have finally warmed up to each other after getting up to speed on the Defiant's time travel adventure.

Too bad that in Relics, they couldn't throw in an enigmatic 'I guess from your perspective this hasn't happened yet' line :)

I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the parts of the UK, considering how fond of each other some of my fellow Americans are.

Wow. That's only 8 months away and a unified Earth seems as far away as it's been for the last century.

If you believe in the "many worlds" theory, then there is at least one Earth where it will happen or has happened. Then again, there is at least one reality where humanity annihilated itself with nuclear fire...or never evolved; in the grand scheme of things, we can call it a wash.

So much wasted potential but that's nothing new for classic Trek. I wish I had a $1 for every time they dropped the potential story ball.

As for Scotty, I try to be content imagining he used the shuttle to finish his mission, go to the colony and enjoy a well earned retirement, sailing his boat and building model ships. ;)

I just don't think he would still be content with that, knowing about all the new technology, changes in culture and society, entire lifetimes of his friends to catch up with. Did he have any family at all to reconnect with?

On TOS he never married or had children. I don't remember "Relics" very well, but just because a great^10 uncle turns up doesn't mean they're necessarily going to be best friends.

Imagine a story where the last (known) surviving member of a family line winds up taking in a temporally displaced, presumed missing relative. "So that's what happened to you...Great grandma always wondered."

Well, he had a sister, her son (Preston from TWoK) died, but it’s possible she had other children.

Before anyone says it, yes, I know that his sister is not canon, but that was the intention. It is canon that he had a relative who was a parent of his nephew and could have had other offspring.

Scotty is restless when he's not working. In The Trouble with Tribbles, he only goes for shore leave on the station when Kirk orders him to go, so as to keep an eye on the junior officers. Scotty is glad when he's confined to quarters after the brawl, because then he can catch up on his technical journals. Going to a bar is fine for a break, or shore leave for as much as a few days, but I don't see him happily keeping his seat in the bar warm for day after day, week after week like Morn. But what would there be to work on? Engineering has changed beyond recognition since the Enterprise with no -A, -B, etc. Maybe he could work at a museum, something like the Smithsonian, where they have some 300-year-old ships still working they way the used to. But there's no such museum on DS9. Have to go to Earth, probably.

My $0.02 on this topic:

I’ve been chatting with Lou Zutavern, one of the modelmakers working with Greg Jein during the production of DS9. He mentioned to me that there was going to be an episode with Scotty, where he had found the location of the TOS Defiant and the DS9 crew were going to help him find it. Zutavern had even started construction on a new TOS Defiant model but it remained unfinished when the episode was deemed too expensive to make (which obviously changed when they decided to produce ‘Trials & Tribbleations’ later.) Zutavern is currently refurbishing that model.

He could spend his time learning the new technology.
