I finally watched it. Very nice. Initial thoughts:
* It was nice to see everyone back together around the poker table.
* I actually cried when Tuvok denied Seven's resignation. God, I love Tim Russ.
* I don't see the point in dragging the Enterprise F on screen only to do nothing with it then shuffle it off to rechristen the Titan as Enterprise G.
But okay.
That's what they did.
* I'm not usually a big fan of Spiner playing roles that aren't Data.
I only really think he's good as Data.
But this 'Nu' Data is a really nice, distinct and subtle character.
Much better than the emotion chip histrionics we got in the movies.
* Q.
Q...
I'm not saying they did, but there is a case to be made for Season 3 'correcting' much of what whoever didn't like about Season 2.
New Borg hand-waved and then Q is alright (I know I shouldn't think so linearly, but... well, that's a hand wave in itself).
I don't mind that they did either thing, but I do think there's a case to be made.
Nepenthe as well...
* No Laris...
Actually, seriously, what the fuck?
Why no Laris?
* Nice job on the D bridge, but as I said last week, it still feels like a conjuring trick.
I wish we'd have seen a corridor or two, the transporter room... I dunno.
As it was it felt like the turbolifts were the 'wings' of a theatre stage and folks just waited in there to make their entrances.
I didn't get a full sense of the environment that is the D.
But still, nice job.
Overall, PIC is a show I like, but despite getting a lot of things right there are still some deep problems with this season. Problems with the show overall, I think. I really wish someone had sat down at the beginning and basically plotted out a three season plan, but it is what it is. IIRC, they didn't know the ending to Season 1 while they were filming it.
So it's a mess, but seeing the TNG crew together makes it a joyous mess at least. 8/10
