Seeing how Star Trek is uniquely United States American, it's not that abnormal. More alien names would be welcome, but would not be easly recognized as MLK ship or names in the States.
He’s not a minor figure in American history. It’s a big fleet, and progressive people like him, figures in human history, absolutely would be recognized in it if some of (many of) the other names we’ve seen are.

This episode broke me. I was full on board of the Picard hype train when EP8 moved me to tears (I am glad I have my friend back.) and ready to overlook all the minor stuff that wasnt perfect. But then, it happened. Picard told Jack what is actually wrong with him, and a bit of dialogue pulled me right ot of the episode.

Jack: "So how much of me is me? Oh, funny! I've always known the world was imperfect. Broken systems, wars, suffering, violence, poverty, bigotry. And I always thought, if people could only see each other, hear each other, speak in one voice, act in one mind together...Who knew a little cybernetic authoritarianism was the answer?"

Who ever thought it was a good idea to write this bit of dialogue must either be totally unaware of the political and social climate, or be a massive troll. Oh watch out folks...its the authoritarians again and they sound like Bernie Sanders. Better dont open the red door.

It reminded me of what Anakin told Padme in Attack of the Clones when he was criticizing democracy. Jack thinks that because of the Borg in him. In the past the Borg Queen has said the Borg bring order to chaos. I think that's what he was saying. Just IMO but I think looking into it real world politically is seeing too much into it.

This episode was a convoluted mess and quite frankly if this had been an episode of Discovery, there's no way people would be praising this writing and this plot as 10 out of 10 stuff. Like no fucking way. There is no way that Discovery would get away with Starfleet being portrayed as so blatantly stupid and negligent, the Borg assimilating everyone under 25, the sheer amount of plot contrivances, and setting the fanwank to post no-nut november levels. Hypocrisy thy name is Trekkie.

Oh, this I agree with 100 percent. There's a lot this season that the same people praising this season for would be attacking Discovery for. How do I know? Because they've attacked Discovery for these things in the past.

One thing I don't understand, maybe just forgotten ... the creation of the new friendly borg happened in the Confederation timeline. How come they now exist in the main timeline too?

The confederation timeline of the past became the main timeline when Renee ended up going to space after all. The Jurati borg then took La Sirena and left...a few hundred years pass and Jurati reappears.

The DS9 writers, when doing the imagined season 8 of the show for the What We Left Behind documentary, proposed having the USS Emmett Till commanded by Ezri Dax, and went to the trouble of having concept art drawn up by John Eaves for it.

IRA STEVEN BEHR: "Hopefully if we ever do reach some approximation of the Gene Roddenberry paradisal 24th century that question would never have to be asked. It seems to me that in order to reach a complete and healthy society we need to do two things. One, the historical record is broken and needs to be fixed. There’s lots of information floating around, but very little context. The past is no longer even prologue, it’s pretty much ignored. Two, we have to own our mistakes, our failures. Again, it seems to me that unless we recognize and remember our mistakes, embrace them, we are doomed to repeat them over and over and over again. Say hello to the 21st century. So, if I’m living on Federation Earth 300 years from now it would make me feel good to know that as Starfleet sails among the stars Emmett Till is sailing along with them. He is remembered. We own his story. He is part of our journey"

We’ll they are bringing back the former crew of the flagship that saved the galaxy on numerous occasions, titanic figures both in-universe and in many of our memories, whose greatest adversary were the Borg…I kinda feel like they get to have this. We all get to have a giant romp like this. A better question might be why a random ship like Discovery felt with crazy high stakes and ended up the savior of the 32nd Century, and yeah it’s the Marvel thing, but even so, occasionally the stakes get that high…..and again, you’re bringing back legends for this one, let the stakes be legendary as well.

So high stakes are bad if it's a new show, but good if it features characters we know?

Not the Jurati Borg events at the end of Season 2. That happened in our timeline after Picard and the La Sirena crew returned to their own proper history. The Borg Queen was from the Confederation timeline but what we witnessed in Episode 10 last year was not from that altered history.

I actually felt like the Enterprise's bridge was over-lit from the way I remember it being in TNG.

Maybe it was the crappy CRT TVs that I was watching from, but I remember the TNG bridge having noticeable recess lighting above the back computer consoles and above the side walls. The way it looks here the entire bridge seems very brightly lit and almost meant as a contrast to the overly dark bridges of 25th century Starfleet.

Also, I'm guessing the dimensions of this set was much smaller than the original TNG set. I noticed that it felt like they were limited in some of the angles they could shoot from compared to the shots they usually used back in TNG, and the camera angles shot from the front looking towards the back of the bridge seemed weird. I think they inserted the line about it feeling "smaller" to acknowledge some of the differences.

As far as why Geordi wouldn't restore it to the Generations bridge, if it's meant as a museum piece, it seems that usually historical artifacts are restored to their most significant form. So I can understand it being restored to the circa season 3/4 Enterprise-D bridge, since that's when it's most historically significant.

True. It wasn't exactly the same. Close enough. Any differences I just chalk up to Geordi using what he had on hand when it came to NOS parts. The bridge was pretty torn apart in Generations so certain angles of walls etc could be a bit off etc as Geordi redid it. It's a good facsimile and didn't need to be exact...

Trouble is they've blown their load on destroying the collective at least once, and so that would be kind of a letdown I think.
Matalas said the finale will be very divisive. I take that to mean fans of the Borg will be upset they are gone for good, and non-fans of the Borg will love it.

I think the problem is that they grew up with instant satisfaction with computers and smartphones, and when they hit the real world they can't interact with people one to one, and they realize how fucking hard it is to make it in real life and it's not instant like smartphones and they get a bitter attitude as many jobs don't pay well. Mine does and I still get this.

It's tough. I'll ask my junior high aged son about time with his friends at school and all they do is play games on separate laptops. When I asked about what they talked about at lunch or before school it's always they didn't talk they were just on their laptops their entire time. So yea kids just aren't developing the same social skills. He says he tries to make conversation with people but everyone is just on their computers.

Which Borg again?
Beverly says, “No one has seen from or heard from the Borg in over a decade.” For those who watched Picard season 2 this might be a bit confusing. But, as Shaw pointed out in episode 4 of this season, the Jurati-led Borg were from an alternate timeline and had nothing to do with the Borg in the Prime Universe. Over a decade means that the last time the “regular” Borg appeared would have been sometime before 2391. This would be roughly around the time the Borg Cube known as the “artifact” went offline before the events of Picard season 1.
