Alright, Objectively I've got to give this a 7/10. And that's being generous, because this is really the first half of a 2-parter of sorts.

The writing was messy in places, the Directing was subpar for this season.. but the performances elevated the material, mainly Levar (who hasn't been this good in ages), and Plummer.

We've got a lot of ground to cover, but potentially nearly 3 hours left of time to close out this story, and this universe.

Close out this universe? The five other Star Trek series in various stages of pre, regular or post production would disagree with you.

He's meaning the 25th Century stories.

As of right now there's no other 25th century series or movies on the horizon beyond the rumored "Legacy"

I saw someone comment (possible elsewhere) but what villains from TNG require the follow up?

There are a few: Sela, Duras (the son), Parasitic Beings, Armus. Those are the only ones that come to mind but I haven't watched the TNG show in a while. I imagine there are others. The big ones (Q, Borg, Romulans) are mostly wrapped up and there is very little to do with them now. I'm not bothered by the fact the used the Dominion/Changelings. Just that it's an ... interesting choice to finish off the TNG's cast's final outing together.

I think this is the best acknowledgement of DS9's story is that there are incredibly powerful consequences that exist far outside the main cast. I think that is more interesting in of itself.

I don't think it's an "either this or that" situation. You can have the Dominion War be bigger than the DS9 cast/show and show that it has galaxy-wide implications while simultaneously letting a DS9 cast member participate in this, even in a small role.

Having said that, a few episodes are left. So there's still time.

Of course you can. I question the storytelling necessity of it, and see it as fan service that is a bridge too far in this ridiculous fan service season.

TOS can only be present if we live in 60s and 70s. If we live in 80s and 90s TNG DS9 and VOY can be present. But in 2020s only PIC can be present.

He was a co-showrunner at the start of the season and such helped layout the storybeats for the entire season. Even in Season 3 he has only 3 script credits.

As co-showrunner on S2, Matalas did help with some story beats but he was not in charge of the entire season. Matalas is the SOLE showrunner on S3. He is in charge of the entire season.
