He became quite friendly with Stewart, and is currently obsessed with his legacy.
I can see him doing it.
I can even see him, and Stewart, possibly lobbying for ‘Star Trek: Kirk’ and it being a one off, movie length, last hurrah as a sweetener.
this could explain that little Easter egg…and judging from the quality of this season I hope they go for it and right what went wrong 30 years ago! Better hurry, though, shat isn’t getting any younger.

I can't. I attended one of the virtual conventions that they had when the pandemic hit, and Shatner was one of the guests, and they asked him about Star Trek: Picard and Shatner noted that Patrick really likes to work, and he respects that, but the he doesn't feel like doing that sort of thing at this time in his life (i.e. a Kirk show). He might still show up in a small part in Picard before it is over though, since I assume a small appearance wouldn't be out of the question.

I'd honestly rather see Pine's Kirk at this point, if they're just going to close the loop on having different continuities.

They're not trying to close the loop on different continuities. If it ain't the Shat doing a cameo, there's no point.

Here's how it'll go down. Picard and the Ent-D are being pummelled by Vadic. Just as Geordi shouts "Warp core failure in 10 seconds!", the Ent-A warps in and helps them destroy her ship (which is shown as the BoP explosion stock footage from STVI).

Picard hails the Ent-A, saying "Who do we have to thank for this?", and Kirk appears on the viewscreen, clad in the monster maroon. He winks and the Ent-A warps away.

The Ent-B shows up right after, and a very old Capt Harriman hails the Ent-D, explaining that their photon torpedoes won't arrive until Thursday (because Tuesday would be too obvious).

Cue the TNG cast autographs.

THE END

I know Bill Shatner has a bad rep at times..but as someone who first was introduced to Star Trek with TOS, saw TUC in theaters and moved onto TNG..

I can't not want him to come back, if only one last time, as Kirk.

I don't know. I'm about as a shameless a TOS partisan as they come, but I figure Shatner's Kirk has already gotten TWO curtain calls already, in TUC and GEN. I'm not sure we need a third encore.

Shatner's Kirk is my favorite fictional character, so I would love any opportunity to see him one more time even for just a moment.

Some of the highest rated and most talked about events in TNG were the return of TOS era characters: "Sarek", "Unification", "Relics", and "Generations". If Picard season three is a love letter to 80's and 90's Trek, a "greatest hits" if you will, then having a TOS character/actor return for a cameo is certainly within that purview.

Shatner is not going to be with us forever and if Matalas decided to give him one last encore, I would love that.

All that being said, just seeing that Kirk was retrieved by Project Phoenix and hearing the sounds of the biobed is far more than I ever expected after "Generations" and makes for a perfectly satisfying coda to that movie for me and stands fine on its own with no follow up needed.

we know that they

filmed on a replica of a very familiar set that brought back a lot of memories and I can’t image that replica being anything less than one of the existing TNG bridge replicas currently around, so I totally expected the D to be back in some form eventually
Also:
About a month or so ago on twitter, LeVar changed his profile pic to a photo of himself in costume as Commodore La Forge with the red/yellow alert panel from the aft part of the Enterprise-D bridge behind him. Looked like it was from a posed publicity photo. Obviously, he changed it back quite quickly.

In terms of Spiner's new/old character...

They need to close Roddenberry's circle, rename Data as Questor and be done with it.

These ships have been sitting there for who knows how many decades / centuries, so they're unlikely to be spaceworthy, let alone ready to go into battle at a moment's notice. Then again practicality isn't often a consideration in Trek so who knows? It would be fun, but surely it won't happen.

Surely by the 24th/25th century ships are full of little nanobots are something that can maintain the them? As they aren't going anywhere or taking any damage and are essentially idling in dry dock, the nanobots surely don't have much to do?

At the very least, the lights are on in all the ships, so they are powered.
