That was the best episode of the season so far, really enjoyed that from start to finish. Not cutting to Worf and Raffi throughout made the whole thing feel more complete.

So how old is Shaw then? Wolf 359 would’ve been nearly 40 years prior and he’d surely had to have been in his twenties to be serving on board a starship. I definitely wouldn’t have said he was in his sixties. Or even late fifties.

Todd Stashwick is 54. If Shaw is the same age, he would have been 20 in 2367 when the borg invaded

Alcoholic beverages are normally being consumed for their taste, marijuana is being consumed to get high ... which in my mind puts it right in league with any other drug.
Sure. No one drinks alcohol just to get drunk.

I'm sure many people appreciate the subtle differences between their rancid dirt waters, and I was present for a lot of tedious as hell conversations in bars, but very few people would drink them if they had no intoxicating effect.

And while I hate smoking of any sort, even I can tell that Marijuana has a flavor as well.

All I know is, if someone sits in a small room with someone else who ten pints, it has no effect on them, whereas in that same space, the person would still get the giggles with weed.
And yes… often alcoholic drinks are consumed for the taste, not the effect, and many alcohol-free versions exist for that reason. When it is used in cooking, it is absolutely not used for the effect, which is also not something true of ‘edibles’.
But this is about Picard, not the tiresome ongoing battle to justify habits people fundamentally *know* aren’t a good idea, and cause suffering somewhere down the supply and demand line.
But maybe I did a little too much LDS in the sixties — which seems to be where Trek sits sometimes, Pot is such a boomer name for the thing it seems really incongruous.

Completely irrelevant:

I mean, I clearly see modern Ed Speleers in there, but boy has he aged in a lot in these 10 years or so.

Do you get to attend the academy at 16?

Assuming we're talking about human students, my guess would be yes, if you are obviously exceptional at that point and pass all the tests and junk.

But young Liam may not have been an Academy graduate at that time. Maybe he was on field studies, or enlisted and later attended the Academy.

Someone even invented something close to synthehol recently. Slight euphoric buzz, swiftly metabolised apparently.

That’s insane. I mean, of course I know there’s virgin drinks and all of that. My wife would do virgin margaritas when she was pregnant and completely understand that. But, seriously, in my opinion, defeats the purpose. Because I live in an uber conservative region of the U.S., marijuana is illegal here (and while I’m sure I could get it, I wouldn’t even know where to start) So even though I joke about CBD oil regularly, really, my only option for destressing is a nice glass of wine or scotch.

Eh, I lived through the alcopops boom of the late nineties — that’s just an inversion of the concept. Alcoholic versions of NA drinks, as opposed to just throwing vodka in everything, and believing the lie that you can’t smell or taste the difference…
Europe has a very different relationship with booze, and Britain then some again.
TBH Jamesons is utterly the wrong whisky for a twenty something Londoner, he’d still be on Jack Daniels (which has extra connotations…) or the Southern Comfort. But everyone is a little more National Pride in Trek amusingly.

To be fair, Jack asked for cheap whisky on the rocks. I doubt sincerely that Paramount sales gave a lot of thought as to which whiskey would make sense. They thought about which whiskey company would be interested in product placement. Just the reality of media and placement in general.

ETA: Also, just because alcohol of choice would be your ideas for Londoners today (or the 90s, whenever), there’s no reason to suggest that either young Londoners tastes have changed in 400 years OR perhaps as even if Jack went to school in London, he had a different taste. I mean, sounds like he grew up in space. Maybe Beverly likes cheap whiskey. Who knows?

Very good episode. Although the reviews of it had my expectations set even higher.

Could Vadic be Shinzon's mother? I know he is a clone but he had to be born somehow...

Borg Vs Changlings finally!

Wondering that myself. Was it beamed into the holodeck once the program started? I mean, it would be pointless to put a year on the bottle if it's not actually real. I doubt the holodeck could actually replicate the conditions that the wine was made under. It would make wine making totally pointless. As for Jameson, why even have a brand of whiskey on a holodeck? It's funny too that in the 25th century a bottle of Jameson looks exactly as it does today. Nice bit of promotion anyway....

Depends what country you go to. I have found it to be more expensive in Ireland and a lot cheaper in other countries. Surely in the 25h Century it's free since money doesn't exist.

I'm liking the idea of Vadic as Shinzon's mother. Could be some more needed redemption for Nemesis. One of the few things I liked about Picard's first season was the proper end it gave Data's character. I can't think of many other ways that Vadic could be someone from Picard's past, especially because it appears he doesn't recognize her. That cuts out past flames like Vash, Anij, and his short-lived romance with Daren. They could just invent a new old lover or friend for him, but that feels like cheating. That said, in dialogue, from Crusher and in Picard's reminiscences, we are getting tidbits of adventures we never heard about before, so Vadic could easily be slotted in somewhere among Picard's decades of being in Starfleet, or perhaps even before he entered Starfleet. I don't think it would hurt to learn more about his time as an admiral before he resigned, though if Vadic was an enemy forged during that time it would seem he would definitely remember her.

And if Vadic was Shinzon's mother, maybe that would explain her involvement in wanting to get Jack, perhaps she wants to take away Picard's son because he took away hers.

Everything in this scene was SO good. The writing of the speech is great. Stashwick absolutely nails it! But the directing from Frakes also adds so much from the cutaways to Jack and Picard's reactions to the sounds of wolf 359 in the background.

EDIT: Also a special "**** you" to TrekCulture youtube channel for spoilering Shaw's backstory in their video. Every other week they've been good and the thumbnails gave away nothing, this week they couldn't help themselves and went with this:
That's very annoying. I was a bit ticked off how everyone was talking about it after episode 1 in a speculative manner but having obviously read spoilers from the people who got to see the first 4 episodes. "Oh, he must have been at Wolf 359, oh that's his ship in the credits, it was probably destroyed by the Borg etc."

It's more expensive in Ireland than other countries because all alcohol is very expensive in Ireland.
I'd imagine they also have a more competitive price abroad when they aren't the biggest fish in the pond.

pure bathtub hobo muck in an off license.
Which I couldn't even find the last time I went to Ireland. Jameson is too nice to be blasting through.

(although you do have to be 18 to purchase alcohol).
Or look 18

Ah yeah, I didn't think of her having that motivation. Makes sense.

Update: I'm starting the petition. I'm thinking about what I want to say in it and am getting jitters. I'll push through it post a link. I'll post at other places too, but you'll all have to help me with outreach.

I think viewership would be more effective than a petition. Just my $0.02.
