Liked this week better than last.

Still not a fan of the way they built the disagreement between Riker and Picard, but they payoff in this one more or less made it worth it. Riker confronting his grief and the way it has changed him while also getting a dose of old school hopium from the reunion with Crusher and Picard.

The reveal that Jack DID try to reach out to Picard only to get backhanded away because everybody involved lacked context was heartbreaking and felt real. Jack truly believed that his father had no use for him, but now starts to see what he was talking about in the actions aboard the Titan. And Jean-Luc realizes that Jack did indeed want, or at least attempt, contact. There is a bridge that can be built there.

Still more questions than answers on Vadic.

And Riker got to throw a rock at Vadic to pay her back for throwing a ship at him a couple weeks ago. Notice that Vadic half-assed the toss, while WIll didn't miss. :p

The same folks that will cry for hours about the Discovery crew "talking about their feelings during a crisis" are going to have no problem with Picard and Son chilling in the holodeck while the ship drifts towards certain destruction

I guess it's OK if white men do it.

Shaw is like a BSG character that got plopped into the Star Trek universe. I'm not saying I dislike him. But he reminds me strongly of that short-lived Pegasus commander who was promoted up from engineering, was clearly out of his depth, and died saving the ship from an attack that he basically caused by arrogantly ignoring Adama's orders.

Anyway, I liked the episode. This season has been 1000% better than either of the last 2.

Have snarked back to my supervisor. Have not had an issue.

Try it in the navy, especially to the commanding officer, and see how it goes.

James T. Kirk called and says that Starfleet has cleared him for duty despite obvious PTSD around Kodos and his encounter with the cloud creature.

And rightly so, because Kirk behaves like a well-adjusted adult human being, especially on his bridge and in front of his crew.

3. The holodeck still has power, when they were scratching for every erg? Yeah, the writers addressed it this time, at least- they're learning!- but still, C'mon, man!
They got that lore from Voyager, they didn't pull it out of their ass. The separate power source part at least. The reason why it has a separate power source comes from the Picard writers.

Vadic wasn't trying to destroy the Titan.

We even have a thread all about it right now!

Then it makes no sense that they just use it willy-nilly. The holodeck used all the time when they're short on food?

It's not that anyway, the episode makes it clear...

Janeway "What about alternative energy sources? Ensign Kim, have you had any luck getting power from the holodeck reactors?"
Kim "Not yet. We tried hooking them to the power grid and we ended up blowing out half the relays. The holodeck's energy matrix, it just isn't compatible with the other power systems."

For better or worse, the Voyager writers just decided, "Fuck it, we want holodeck stories. A fifteen second scene is all we need to justify it."
*emphasis added by me. Special thanks to Tosk for finding the relevant line:beer:

Well it looks like the ones of us that Iiked Shaw the whole time were right. He was affected by the borg attack as a young officer and had a beef with Picard. To the haters. I told you so. Lol

I must have caught a spoiler or something way back because I thought everyone understood Shaw's issues came from surviving Wolf 359 before now. Maybe not.

I'm not a Shaw 'hater' per se, but my argument has been that his character presents as mentally unfit to command a starship. He needs somma that 25th Century treatment from Deanna Troi types or some other miracle drug or PTSD curing hospital with ethically questionable alien technology. (Or a hug from Dr. Helen Noel...)

Loved the little tidbit about the Hirogen making it to the Alpha Quadrant and Picard fighting them.

Because they were so worried about alcohol not fitting the future, they invented synthahol for the show.
But the real stuff still exists along side synthahol. We've seen it multiple times in the pre-2017 shows.

Loved the little tidbit about the Hirogen making it to the Alpha Quadrant and Picard fighting them.
And that one cadet asking "how did they get to the quadrant?" and then not answering it
That had to been a wink to part of the audience.

Jack Crusher being Picard's Academy friend is a bit of a retcon, meaning Jack at the youngest would've been born in 2308 (unless he's like Kelvin Chekov in which case he'd be younger), meaning Jack was 16 years older than Beverly. And even this is assuming Picard was hanging around students 3 years his junior for some reason. Nothing outright contradicts this but there was no indication Picard knew Jack that young before, for example in Tapestry when Q takes him back to his ensign days, Jack isn't even mentioned.

To be fair, you can attend the academy at any age. See McCoy and Vulcans.

Picard's son Jack has to at most be 21. We know it's still before April in 2401 and even if Picard and Beverly got into bed right after Nemesis in 2379, Jack would be born at earliest in late 2379, meaning he can't be older than 21 in Picard Season 3 despite Picard guessing his age as 23/24. This also means that in the 2396 flashback, Jack somehow got into the Ten Forward bar despite being 16.

He's said to be about 24, which means he's older for his age but not that young.

The same folks that will cry for hours about the Discovery crew "talking about their feelings during a crisis" are going to have no problem with Picard and Son chilling in the holodeck while the ship drifts towards certain destruction-- and oh look the Captain of the ship decided to come to the holodeck instead of going to the bridge of his ship after he got out of sickbay. Oh and it's all lit like a nightclub. Great stuff.

Did you not see the scene where Riker immediately before explicitly spells this out? Did you forget the part of your own comment that says "certain destruction"?

They fudged Jack Crusher's age. It's TV. What are you going to do? It's not a big deal. The specific age isn't the point. The point is he wanted to get a look at his father when he grew up.

You probably don't have to be 21 to get into Ten-Forward. Otherwise, that leaves out a lot of freshman, sophomore, and junior Cadets who would be 18-20.

I liked the asteroid-throwing attack. Have fan-ficced that a few times! Also, any chance someone accidentally dripped Armus goo in some of Great Link? That's my theory. That stuff gets everywhere.
He was so pissed after the LD group crank-called him, he grabbed a taxi shuttle and went looking for them. He didn't find them, but as long as he was out of the house.....
